What's new

Hand made scuttle - by yours truly!

I have noticed how many of you have posted pictures of your shaving related projects - now it's my turn

Well over 30 years ago I took some ceramics classes at University and in the past year or so have taken it up again, setting up a studio (wheel, kiln, chemicals to make glazes, and all of the other stuff). Shaving AD is nothing compared to this by the way.

Anyway - I had wanted a scuttle so I thought, why not make your own? Here is the result of my first try, and I am very pleased. It works like a charm! I put some water in both bowls and pop it in the microwave for 1 min., put my brush in some hot water to bloom, and take my shower. I pour out the water from the bottom and replace it with the larger quantity of hot water in the lather bowl and start making lather. I am really surprised at how well it keeps the lather and brush warm for the 2nd and 3rd pass!

The photo on the left shows the two pieces of the scuttle (the far left holds the hot water and the right (middle photo) is my lather bowl. The photo on the right shows both pieces fitting together. One thing I like about the way I made the scuttle is the fit of the lather bowl and the base bowl is rather tight and I think it may cause the water to stay hot longer. I had thought of putting a little spout to pour the water out, but then it might let the heat escape.

Until I tried using a scuttle I was a bit unconvinced about using one, now it will be used for all my shaves.

Well, you're not trying hard enough! :w00t:

Seriously, nice scuttle! That you made it by hand is all the more satisfying. :a14:

Are you planning to have some for sale? I can't seem to find anything at the local shops :'(

Hi Carlin,

You know I have not even thought of that - but "IF" and that's a big if, I would consider making and putting them up for sale. Up to this point I have not sold anything and have just been making stuff for myself and family.

I have made the plates, bowls, mugs, pitchers, wine goblets, and stuff like that we use at home. Well and now a Scuttle :)

Tell you what - I will "try" to make a couple and see if I can make a few that I would not be ashamed of putting out there and "if" I do then I'll post to B&B. But because I have never sold any of my stuff I have no idea on what something like this should cost!

Thanks for planting that idea in my head!

Very nice. I like the two piece construction a lot. I use a scuttle every day and enjoy it tremendously. I think a shave mug, for a puck of soap, in the same design would look nice beside your scuttle. Thanks for sharing.

I was thinking of doing an insert like the lather bowl but have a couple of holes in the bottom of the insert to let water drain from the puck. Is that what you mean or keep the same set up but just add a mug for soap?

I've heard good reviews about the scuttles at Dirty Bird Pottery. You could use them as a price point for "professional" stuff. Their regular size is $42.
