Group Buy: Kanayama Strop #5260

The group buy is closed.

I'm holding a group buy for Kanayama strop #5260. It measures 26" X 2.5" X 1/8" with 14" of usable strop area. The #30000 strop is 2.5 mm thick and the #50000 is just under 4 mm thick. The #5260 fits in between at 3.175 mm.

The price for US buyers is $110 shipped each. The price for international buyers is $120 shipped each. I will take delivery of the strops going to US buyers and I will ship them to each respective buyer by Priority Mail. If you want insurance, it's $2.75 extra. Strops going to buyers in other countries will be shipped directly to them from Japan by Express Mail. It's the fastest and most secure. I had to estimate the weight of the strops for shipping purposes. At most, the price could go up $5 if my estimate is too low.

The deadline for payments is Friday, December 10, 2010. Delivery should be within two weeks of me placing the order. I don't want this to linger and have packages caught up in the holiday rush.

Huh, never seen a Kanayama w/ handles before. I've actually come to prefer plain leather as the end of a strop. These look like a great strop though, and no doubt they are of the highest quality.

Telly,
These are wonderful strops. I have the 80K I bought from JimR on SRP and I love it ...albeit, it is soooo nice, I use it sparingly for fear of nicking it

Guys I have been wanting to get a Tony Miller Artisan Strop for ages but as I understand he doesn't make them anymore and anytime I see them on the BST they are always snatched up before I even get to see them appear on the listings.

Can you folks please tell me how this compares to the Artisan or Red Latigo strops that Tony Miller makes? I have a black shell strop that I bought from an antique store and I was going to restore it but it doesn't seem to be as long as this one. I am interested but I need to know if I should hold out for a TM strop or take the plunge here.

Telly can you please hold one for me until tomorrow please while I do some thinking on this? Thanks so much. :biggrin1:

Kanayama are very, very nice strops. I have a different model and a TM with Latigo and Linen. They see equal use. Since Tony's production is very limited, I'd recommend picking one of these up.

I see latigo as an all-purpose strop. You don't really need to use the linen with the latigo because the draw is already heavy. These shell strops are more luxurious but they don't have a heavy draw, which makes use of the linen more important. From my limited experience with latigo strops, shell strops also leave a better edge. Then again, I use the linen regularly.

To my knowledge, they're all shell cordovan strops. The strops differ in thickness and length. Also, I've read that he gets a higher quality of leather for strops #70000 and up. That is not to say that the strops below that number aren't still excellent.
