My grandfather died close to 20 years ago and his house has been vacant ever since. We use it for storage and such and a few weeks ago I decided to see if be had a DE razor as I remember. Well he did and now I am the proud owner of a 1959 (if I read the date code right, E1) Gillette Adjustable razor. Still in the plastic case after all these years. I have to wonder when he acquired this. He worked for Standard Oil - later bought by Exxon - and retired in 1968. He traveled up and down the Mississippi and Ohio rivers on a tug pushing oil barges. I remember taking him to the local barber shop in the late 80's when I was in college and watching the local barber give him a haircut and shave with a straight razor. Man, those were the days.
I cleaned the Gillette up and other than some tarnish on the doors (?) it looks to be in perfect working order. I plan to give it a try this week. I started wet shaving with a DE razor when I was a kid and recently returned to it this year. I'll never go back to disposable razors. I'm teaching my 15 year old to use his safety razor as he is getting to that age.
