What's new

Got a package in the mail today

Don't get excited about it...it's used (or how I like to say "vintage") stuff.
Anyhow:

Part of me wants to glue down the leather on the handle strop, but another part of me says to leave the dang thing alone. Same with the strop...part of me wants to hit it with some leather cleaner while another part is slapping my hand away.
Anyhow, I got both of these & a Griffon straight (w/bakelite case) for $25 shipped.
Did I do good??

A hanging strop, one with a handle & this straight:

$IMG_0033[1].jpg$IMG_0034[1].jpg$IMG_0035[1].jpg$IMG_0036[1].jpg$IMG_0037[1].jpg

It has Griffon XX & 35 on the one side (along with some design) & the other side has some kind of 4-legged critter w/wings & a tongue sticking out. Has "Germany" underneath that. Fancy design carries around to the back of the handle. It seems to be in pretty good shape, although it does need a good cleaning & sharpening.
Go to the "Strop" thread to see pics of the strops that came with this. I picked the whole bundle up for $25 shipped.
Hope I did good.

It should clean up well and shave fine. The face of the blade should have etching on it. Here's mine:

Yours looks like it's got more shaves and hones on it than mine, but mine honed up just fine and gives great shaves.

You're exactly right, KWDriver, it does have that etching on the (crooked) blade.
I don't know whether to attempt straightening that thing up or leaving it to a pro, however.

The "critter" is a picture of the mythical Griffon. Like this one:

I think it's a sweet looking razor and for 25 bucks delivered including strop, you got an excellent deal. A professional restoration will cost you much more than that razor will ever be worth, I suspect. I might be wrong and better informed members should chime in and correct my error if that's the case, but you may want to save your restoration money for when you score that vintage W&B or Puma or MK. Instead, go back and read some of the threads in the restoration sub forum and learn how to get that rust and grime off without losing the decoration yourself. I've done a bunch of restores (though not on any blades with etching on the blade...only stamped tangs) and it's immensely gratifying.

I believe the feeling of satisfaction in doing a restore is inversely proportional to one's natural mechanical aptitude. My feeling of satisfaction, therefore, is an 11 on a 10 scale.

I'm sure some of the other fellas will chime in however doesn't seem to bad a deal. You'll probably want to rub some neats foot oil into the leather as it looks a bit dry.
Good luck anyway

Yeah, I think i'll at least try to clean it. I might get daring & try to do something with that blade...I dunno. Definitely different than sharpening/fixing pocketknife blades!
I think the strop with the handle is wore out...don't know if it's worth keeping or not. Anyhow, it was a package deal, so...........
How does one clean up the linen on the hanging strop?
