Goodfella or Merkur 34C?

It seems that most of the posts that I've seen about the Goodfella describe it is a mild, uninspiring shaver. The handle is also smooth, for which I automatically disqualify it. Even with just water you need some kind of grip.

Haven't used a 34C. My 39C is technically my best shaver, but I'm not completely impressed with the workmanship or design. Having to manually make sure that the razor blade is aligned is my top criticism. The head on the 34C is looks similar, but may not have the same problem. Of course, if you love the razor, this issue may not be an issue with you.

I'm not aware of any vintage Gillettes that have these two problems (smooth handle/blade alignment). None of my 9 do. Ten if you include my Mach 3. ;-)

Good luck,

Steve

For the same money as the Goodfella, you can pick up either the 34C or 37C Slant new or used and a nice open comb vintage 3 on the BST. I'd take a vintage open comb over the Goodfella and depending on how comfortable you are at shaving, the Slant over the HD. ymmv.

I personally like the 34C. I have never had a problem aligning the blade. The blade will straddle the center screw and also two guide posts on either side of the screw.

I've got both - depends if you want open comb or not. Also the Goodfella is a 3 piece, where the 34c is two. Not a huge deal, but a difference nonetheless.

The Goodfella is a nice razor. The handle is smooth, but it's also stainless steel - which doesn't get slippery like chrome plated brass - there's no problem gripping it.

The 34c is a nice razor too - but if given the choice between these two, I'd take the Goodfella. But I like open-combs.

To complicate your decision, look at Muhle as well - R89 and R41.

All would make great gifts.

I know the OP originally asked for a choice of 34C or Goodfella (so I apologize in advance for suggesting an alternate), but if you want a RAD killing razor for yourself or as a well-crafted gift, check out the Edwin Jagger DE89L for under $30.

+1, although it did not kill my RAD :001_smile. I have the DE89L and it is a very good shaver and a beauty. I much prefer it to the 34C. I have never used a Goodfella, so I cannot comment on how it compares to it.

I see no reference on the Goodfella site to the razor being made from stainless.
In fack they refer to their 2 models as Chrome and black satin.
FWIW, the base plate of my GF is magnetic but neither the cap or the handle is.
BTW, I know some SS aren't magnetic.

Hi Guys,

Just confirming for you the specs.

The shaft is stainless steel with a nice weight to it. The head is either bright chrome or satin black chrome. The Goodfella has been designed in Solidworks computer aided design so that it is perfectly balanced and delivers the blade at a sweet cutting angle.

Each Goodfella is hand polished and stylishly packaged. I am so confident about the design and the modern materials used that each Goodfella has an individual number that you can register for the lifetime guarantee.

The Goodfella is a luxury item to be treasured and used every day.

Used daily by goodfellas its the only razor you need to buy.

Well if they used Computer aided design, I believe they started with faulty data.
I believe the consensus on these sites is it not as good a razor as the Old Type which it certainly is a copy of.
I traded for one and my opinion is there's not enough spacing between the combs and the arch of the head looks flatter then a Old Type.

+1 to all of this.

The vintage Gillettes win out right now in cost and build. That's not to say Goodfella 2.0 couldn't be built to be an even better razor if they get some input from the shaving community.

Bought a Goodfella and returned it without even trying to shave with it. I wasn't impressed at all to say the least. Major quality control issues.

I do have a 34C and used it everyday 'till I got my Bull Mastiff Old Type. I would recommend going with the 34C since it's your first razor.
