Good starter boar for a guy who's tried almost EVERY badger

I have a very large collection of high-end badgers, and I feel that I owe it to myself to try a boar brush.

Putting together an order at WCS right now, and want to know what you guys would recommend.

My top 5 brushes are my PL10 Manchurian, PJ3 Manchurian, CH2 Silvertip, 2XL Gel, and PL1 Old-Style, so I do like dense/scrubby brushes.

My two favorite boar brushes are both sold by WCS. The Omega would be a great all around starter brush IMO. If you are a fan of hard English soaps you can't beat the Semogue.

Another vote for the SOC boar. I had the Omega 31064, and it was a bit too floppy for me.

The combination of good backbone and soft tips is just right with the SOC.

I was using only badgers until recently. A fellow member recommended the B&B Essential boar as my first boar. I've been using it a couple of weeks now and I'm really enjoying it. It gets better with every use. Not bad for $20.

This is spot on. The only brush I am getting a fairly decent lather out of a puck of GFT Limes is a Semogue 1460. Good backbone, soft tips. There is really no splay with it like the 1305 yet (Less than 20 lathers and I don't really know if it gets floppier.) Picks up loads of soap and doesn't incorporate air into the mix like most of my badgers. Had a dense creamy lather today. Don't know how the popular SOC compares...

+10 for the SOC boar.
With that offer (post#10), I am thinking of stocking up on this. You can't have too many brushes , can you ?

Update:
Just pulled the trigger, SOC boar, cherry wood:blush:.

It takes quite a while to start showing what it really can do , so don't be discouraged in the first 20 uses. I also have some high end badgers (M&F custom fan, 2XL fan, CH 2, D01 etc.) but I do see why some folks just like a nice boar brush. Totally different animal, literally:biggrin1: but also excellent performance !

The SOC would be my recommendation. The Semogue 830 is also amazing though, has an acrylic handle, and is a little less dense so it seems to break in faster. I really love both brushes.

+1. And if you want to get a great brush for a great cause, look here.

A really dense feeling badger is hard to find but I really like the scrubbiness of a good boar. Wonderful face feel while lathering. To get a good taste of a boar, I'd look for a loft of as close to 50mm as you can get with a 23 or 24mm knot. The bigger knots tend to have higher lofts, not that there is anything wrong with that your just probably not going to find the feel your looking for. Good luck, at least boar are less expensive to experiment with.

You know what it's like since you have a bunch of badgers. Don't do that with boars. Just go straight for the SOC and you won't need anther boar unless you lose or break that one.
