Gillette Super Speed vs. Travel Tech

2nd post...new to the forum, but I've been shaving with my first DE(1955 super speed) for 5 or 6 months now. I really like this razor. I've gotten to the point where I can shave even a bit rushed and still get a nice shave with only 2 passes and little to no irritation whatsoever. Long story short I ended up with a 1965 travel tech that I actually was buying for someone else but decided to get them a SS instead and just kept the TT for the time being. I've heard it compared to the SS in terms of the aggressiveness(or lack thereof) and overall shave experience so I decided rather than getting rid of it right away I'd at least give it a whirl.

Well I tried the tech this week for the first time and I was surprised that it was nothing like the SS at all. I felt like it was really pulling at the hair while cutting it...nothing like my SS which is smooth as silk when I shave. I don't know if that was because the blade was too far away from the skin while cutting the hair(not aggressive enough maybe) or if the angle of the blade wasn't right since the shape of the head is definitely different. I put a single shim in it and used it on my head the next day and I think it may have been marginally better, but it still doesn't seem to take the hair off like the SS does in one or two passes.

Any thoughts on what to do with the tech to get a better shave from it? At this point I may just get rid of it anyway because the SS is just that good IMO. I've looked at picking up a slim to have basically a SS with adjustability, but really I'm not sure anything will seem as effortless as the SS.

I know what your talking about. Just keep using the Tech for a while, until you get used to it, or get a different handle for your tech and a sharper blade like I did.
I love my travel tech now!

The short handle maybe throwing you a curve. Many get their best Tech results with a sharp blade like the Feather. If you are going to stick with it, try different angles till you get your best cutting.

Thanks guys for the advice. I was considering making a handle for it, which was my plan when I bought it anyway. I'm sure the short handle isn't helping matters either...I'll have to shave with it for a few weeks and see if my impressions change.

I've been using wilkinson swords from wally world until they stopped carrying them. I just had my 100 pack of Derby Extras delivered yesterday and used one of those this morning in my SS on my face. I couldn't tell a discernible difference between the two brands...still that same comfortable close shave I've been getting from my SS. I'll have to go back to the tech for a while and experiment with shims and technique, but I'll still keep my eye open for a slim.

So before I go ahead and make a wooden handle for this one I want to see if I even like it, but the short handle is problematic I'm afraid. I stopped at the hardware store and picked up a threaded aluminum spacer and a stainless 10-32 screw.

Cut the head off the screw and did a quick aluminum polish of the spacer with some mother's polish and I think it'll work at this point to get the extra length and see if I can make this razor work. Now the handle is just as long as the SS, not quite as heavy, but should be much more comfortable and easier to get at the right angle.

Well, I shaved my head with the extension on the razor this morning and 2 shims under the blade. It definitely went better than it had the first couple of shaves. The added handle length is allowing me to make sure my angle is right and get a better feel for it for sure. I'm still not sure I really like it...I'll give it a couple of weeks and see if I can make it cut like the SS with as little effort as it requires.

I bought a short handled travel tech a few weeks ago and didn't like my first go around with it. Then i took my handle off my 1921 and tried it again and man what a difference. Now i just love it even with el cheapo blades. I just ordered some Stainless Steel round stock to make some custom handles longer than the short one that came with it...Bob

Hey Bob, I know this is an old post, but did you ever make that custom handle for your travel tech?
