Gillette old type question.

I have a Gillette 3 piece "old type" dating from around 1910-1911, it has a 3 hole baseplate that has an open comb/teeth and the top cape has a threaded post and two other solid post one on each side of the threaded center post. My question is, do I have make a shim from another blade before putting another blade in? Can they use modern DE blades? How do they shave? Thanks.

Yes, the head looks the same except the it's a 3 piece instead of a two piece, the center post is short, not long like in the photo, the handle comes off/screws onto the head of the razor. I guess the razor is likely from around 1921. It looks like this razor in the photo

You can shim but you don't have too. I use regular DE blades in mine, it is my favorite DE razor and the only DE I use anymore.

To answer your Q's in order:
Shim - Not needed
Use Modern - Yes
Shave - I like 'em, tho' some may find them aggressive; if you find it too mild, then you can add shim.

Hope this helps

Short, gentle strokes with the top cap almost flush against the face.

No shim required . . . Astra SP works nicely.

While not overly aggressive by design, OTs will bite and irritate if used incorrectly. This original design left very little margin for error, as most men of that era knew how to shave with a straight razor and naturally applied the same technique when using the Gillette.
