What's new

Gillette "NEW" high ebay price

I've been watching eBay for a "NEW" and it seems the prices are high. What is a good price for a user grade "NEW"? Are the collectors driving the prices? (I know lots of questions)

I also looked at etsy and they have a few at around $20-$25 but the pictures are not very clear and I find that a lot of them are miss identified. Is Etsy a good place to look or too risky for a noob?

Figure out which razor you are interested, search for it under completed listings. That will give you a good idea of the price range.

I've bought several NEW's recently and you're in the ballpark. You will likely pay a bit more on eBay but if your a bit patient you can get a decent user grade here in the BST or on Etsy. I've personally never used Etsy, but based on what you're saying the prices are, I wouldn't be too put off.

Really, as long as all the teeth are straight and there is no damage other than plating loss, you are in pretty good shape. You can shave with the razor, then if you really like it spend $40 or so, get it replated in nickel and it will be good for another 75 years.

When searching eBay switch your search wording up a little, i.e. "used razor." I found a great black beauty short that way! Just my 1/2 cent.

Imatabor; You're right, about $20-25. If you are looking at a long comb NEW, do not bid unless the pictures of the guard plate are large and clear enough for you to inspect for bent teeth. Short comb NEWs don't have that problem in my experience. And watch those shipping charges! Techichi sells on Ebay and is a member of B&B. I dealt with him with entire satisfaction before I knew that. With care you can find decent deals. I select "Gillette Safety Razor" then "ending soonest" to make sure that I see every Gillette NEW because some sellers don't call them that. Good luck and welcome to B&B!

Thanks for the help. I typed in "used razors" and saw some lower prices compared to "vintage Gillette". I guess I was just shocked that these are going for $45+.
Is there a large collectors market for these razors?

They are not rare but are highly regarded as shavers. I have a couple of NIB that cost more but I plan on using eventually.

Searching in some rural antique stores, I've found a couple of them. One was $4 and the other was $8. I guess I got lucky. It helps if they're dirty when you get them.

Here's the $8 one, before and after cleaning.

That razor sure cleaned up nicely. That was a really great score for $8 or less.

I love the NEW long comb, but I've been shaving the past 3 days with the NEW short comb, and man is it smooth. Less aggressive than the LC to me, but still efficient. I don't have to worry so much that it will bite me if my concentration lapses. Mornings are tough for me so I'm not always at my best. I need something that will forgive me a lapse or two.

I just got my 4th type of NEW in the mail today. It's the Goodwill model. I will likely shave with that in the morning to see how it is. It's a LC model, but the blade gap looks different, so we'll see. Man, I love looking at all these NEW's and I like shaving with them more. I haven't been this excited about gear in quite a while. Maybe the most excited I've ever been!

GNU, GNU, GNU!!!!

It is amazing how some of these things clean up. The fact that it is a 60+ year old item is really incredible.

How about a WTB in the B&B Shaving Mall ?
I'm only half looking as I'm new to this and don't want to intrude the folks here. Plus I thought you have to have something like 40 posts before you post on that part of the forum.

The NEW is one of my favorite razors. It's the best shaving of all my razors (though my Old Type is a close second) and looks sharp. I love the open comb!
