Gillette Fat Boy (Question)

good late morning to you folks. as I stated here over the weekend I purchased the razor at an antique store and I had been on the look-out for a little while wanting to buy just the right razor. I knew that I wanted one just like my father had when I was a child. I saw it in the case there right next to the "slim" model which I forced my pal Brandon to pick up while we were there. E-Bay played a big part in finding just the right make and model as I had not been by this forum yet.

I love the adjustability of mine that Brandon's doesn't have . . . although, I quickly found out the hazards of going from a throw away razor to shaving on an eight setting! - lol I back it down to "save face" (literally)

I dated it using the numbers as instructed by some website and from what I found it was made in the USA in 1963

can anyone fill in the blanks on this razor's history?

If yours is 1963, and Brandon's is not adjustable, I think you got a Slim and he got a SuperSpeed. Fat Boy razors were made from 1958-1961.
The number next to the letter in the date code is the quarter of manufacture, as well.

I have a 1963 Slim (my "birth year razor") and find it a real pleasure.

For a comprehensive guide on dating info go to the wiki right here on B&B. I purchased my FB in 1959 and then bought a Slim in 1962. They are among my favorite razors.

Wags, I'll be damned! - I just looked it back up online and type Fat Boy/Slim and I found a picture and a description of the razor I have. it's a "Slim" in fact! does that mean the dating I've done isn't near correct? thanks for clearing this up for me.

The dating probably is correct -- that's what clued me in to you having a Slim. Jim posted the link to the dating wiki above -- should clear everything right up.

Here are my FB and Slim so you can see the difference in the razors. The FB is on the left. As you can see it is shorter and fat and the Slim is longer and slim. :001_smile

I have one kidney to offer the person here that is willing to grade his "Fat Boy" for it . . .

Have to be careful in using the 'Bay as a source for IDing razors because what is not listed as "Fat Boy"( I won't go into the Slimboy or the dreaded Fatboy Slimboy) is the "super, ultra, rare" deplated NEW.
The Slim is a mighty fine razor though so enjoy.
Now make with the pics,we demand razor porn!

alright! - tomorrow I will take and post a few picture of what I currently have. it's funny to me to have just read "razor porn" because I am a member of a guitar forum as well and the too demand porn, but it's guitar and amp porn . . . lol

You might actually prefer the Slim as a shaving tool. Plenty of folks do. Fatboys tend to be pricier because they're more iconic and because they were only made for a short time. I like both a whole lot, and am not sure but I think I prefer the Slim for when I lose the goatee and 'stache. I like the weight of the Fatboy more. Barely. The Slim head shape is more maneuverable for yer upper lip and such.

I hope you didn't pay Fatboy price for a Slim, but either way I wouldn't recommend trading that Slim away too quickly.

I hope Brandon didn't pay a Slim price for a SuperSpeed too. But I think a SuperSpeed is often the perfect DE for a newb. Acquisition disorders aside, I might've lived with a SuperSpeed as a sole DE razor quite happily.
