Gillette 50th anniversary set.maybe

So this little guy finally arrived in the mail, and upon inspection I discovered a few things I didn't know from the auction. First Gillette advertises the 50th Anniversary in 1951, and the cap in this set is a B-2 from 1956 according to our Wiki page. So I've come to the conclusion that someone may have switched the razor at some point, although everything else in the set hasn't been opened and is near mint so it leaves me wondering. My second surprise was under the unopened blade box. It looks like a set of instructions on how to get a perfect shave with the Gillette razor. I'm surprised these made it through the ages because they aren't on regular paper but almost like a tracing paper. Any water on these from the razor being put back in the case would of turned these into mush. I Google translated a few sentences from the card but wasn't trying to write everything. The pictures in the middle represent the blade in its various stages of grinding. Am I wrong on the date for the anniversary or has someone seen some other documents that say they celebrated it at a different time? Probably mismatched but still a cool little case with sticker.

We do not know that Made in Argentina date codes match up with USA codes, do we?

Even if the date codes match, chances are they made up a batch of stickers and cases, and kept using them until they were gone. If that took 5 years, then it took 5 years.

If i recall the date codes do match. But how can an actual anniversary set be authenticated if the razor or case does not have a date code?

Gillette Timeline

1906

  • "offices were opened in Germany and other countries in Europe, Asia, South Africa, Australia, and South America. Also a factory was established in France to supply the demand there for the Gillette Safety Razor and Blades." The German office was probably in Berlin, and the French office in Paris. The first Montreal factory also opened.[58]

Tom, Mike knows that the factories existed in South America, but he was not sure about the date codes. Some are different in foreign countries such as England and Canada to be exact.

I am still curious to know whether or not the date codes line up. For this set it may not matter. Tom makes a good point about marking the date Gillette entered each market. It would be nice to have better data: Gillette ads from Argentina ca. 1950-56 showing the anniversary set, for example. But so far I have not been able to find any.

The closest match I see from Achim is a Tech in a similar case, placed to the 1940s:

+1 he stole it from all of us!!!!!!

And now I'm sharing with all of you!

If offices were opened in South America in 1906 I wonder where they were. In some text from a book called "Resisting Hostile Takeovers - The case of Gillette" they state the in 1942 construction on the Argentina plant starts and in 1943 they incorporate.

Maybe it was Brazil? in 1906

I saw one that had a 1949 date. But there is no sure shot way to find out if it is the right set, i have not seen many around that may resemble the Coronation sets. Those sets we more or less know what razors belong and the date.

The Brazil [Rio DE Janiero] factory was really the old Autostrop factory that Gillette merged with in 1930 and took over as a result of the big legal battles that Gillette lost to Autstrop owner Gaisman, in 1943 he made a new plant in Brazil. Argentina plant was open 1942. Gillette president Spang then opened a sales subsidiary in Mexico that was supplied by USA and Canadian plants.

Well Gillette never really gets around to explaining what the "50th Anniversary" seal is all about. My guess would be they were celebrating a Gillette presence in the country that started as marketing and evolved into manufacturing from 1906 to 1956. That is my theory for night.

Tom, but it is Gillette's anniversary set which means that it is when Gillette was found in 1901.
