I've collected each of the three-piece vintage Gillette models:
- Old type with ball-end handle
- New improved (standard)
- New
- Goodwill
- Tech
to complement my TTO red tip, slim adjustable and aristocrat and more contemporary Merkur and Edwin Jagger.
I really enjoy using the Gillettes in the sequence of their manufacture - a weekly march through history.
It seems to me that the old type is the most aggressive, and that each successive model (except for the Goodwill) is less aggressive. My theory is that this reflects the changing times and market. At the beginning the 20th century, we were an agricultural based society, farmers probably did not shave daily and needed the open comb aggressive old type. Over the next 50 years, we became more urban, daily shaving became the norm and the New and Tech were easier on the face.
Here are a few photos of my shave den hardware.
