Gillette #21 No. 430030 Found in Family Trunk

Hi all,

I am new here so be gentle! i have to say the most i know about razors is how to shave before i go to work. Whilst clearing out i found my grandfathers razor. I have attached a picture for you all to see. Does anybody have an idea if it's really a Gillette #21?

Jeez, that is an amazing find! You have a very nice and valuable razor. It is even more valuable because it was your Grandfather's! I couldn't find a #21 with that exact color of case lining but I am 99% positive it is. Maybe someone here that knows more than I will come along say definitively whether or not it is a #21.

Regardless, awesome razor!

First of all welcome!
It´s not a #21. It looks like you got either a #66 or a #16. Some of us think that those British Aristos are the greatest razors EVER. A VERY nice find I must say. What patent numbers do you got inside the blade gap?
A great well for information is provided by one of our dear members here. Mr Razor. Check his site out.

Hi all,

Thanks very much for the warm and informative replies, the patent number is 430030? I understand this is 1948?

Congrats! Most likely a #16- a razor that at least myself prefer to the #66. Determine the age is trickier without the original case of course. But yes- 1948 or 1949 is the closest people have come by looking at old ads in magazines.

When you say the original case Hendrik do you mean the cardboard case because I do believe its in its original metal one with the engraving on the top.

I agree, probably a #16. Does the baseplate look like the one below?

The razor I have is exactly the same as the above example including the baseplate. Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Welcome Donnie - that is a very nice find from your grandfather - since you are new you may not know that it is a highly sought after razor, also that you are not allowed to sell anything, let alone a family heirloom, until you've met certain requirements as far as posts and length on the board .. so hang around awhile & learn how to use it

Wow!! That's a beauty. I see them from time to time and reallly admire them. Someday I'll nab me one. But for now, a BIG congrats on a priceless heirloom. Shave with it and get back to us on how it behaves. Cheers!
