Get my choice of any Peterson Pipe

I get my choice of any Peterson Pipe and was looking for recommendations. This will be my first pipe ever. I am a cigar smoker of over 15 years and want to enjoy a pipe now and then.

I appreciate any thoughts or recommendations.

Thanks!

You really can't go wrong with any Peterson. They are high quality pipes. Do some looking around online and see what appeals to you. The only thing I would recommend is to stay away from a "system" pipe (some find them hard to smoke) and/or something with a bent stem, bent stems are harder for newbies to clean.

My first pipe in April was a Peterson Killarney with a P-Lip. I held it in a pipe store and really liked the feel. I also paid a lot more than ordering on line. I like the P-Lip. I find it easier to take slower draws then my cob pipe. The only problem with the bent stem is I can't run a pipe cleaner down to the bowl. It stops at the shank. No big deal, I just wait until it cools and take it apart.

Not the first (or last) time in my life I overpaid for something on an impulse buy. If I had looked at all the Peterson's on-line, without being able to see or hold some of them, I probably wouldn't have bought the one I did. I'm happy with the pipe so no regrets. I continue to buy my tobacco (and check out pipes) at that store, but the next pipe I'll shop around for price.

I've been eyeballing several Peterson's myself. Been at this for years and just have never bought one but I'd like to try them out I only ever hear good things overall.

Couple considerations you may want to take into account in your decision:

1. As a cigar smoker were you the type that held the cigar in your hand the majority of the time or was it in your mouth for the duration? Reasoning is full bent pipes lend themselves to be better clenchers, straight pipes are better held (and used as a pointing device in conversation). It's a weight distribution thing..

2. What's your preference for length of smoke? Are you a shorter or longer duration smoker? That'll help with bowl size determination. If you like to be in the 30-45 minute range then a bowl in the mid-size range would be the best bet. If you like longer smokes obviously get a larger bowl size.

njpaddy if you put a slight kink in the first 1/2" of the pipe cleaner you may be able to push the cleaner back and forth while rotating the pipe and walk the cleaner to the draft hole, and then feed it down through.

This is my biggest grip about Petes, and it's so prevent they must think it's a feature, but I think it's an problem that they can't drill a hole through the center of their gigantic mortises.

Budget always being a factor, you may want to look into an estate. I have bought several estates from Smoking Pipes dot com - they come cleaned and smoke ready at a lower price than the new.

The red XL23 spigot I posted n the Pipe of the Day section (here #4957) was from their estate section, as was my Peterson XL15 (Sherlock Homes "The Squire").

If you get your choice of any Peterson pipe, Then go with a silver spigot pipe or one from the Mark Twain series. Or for the same money thereabouts, there's a limited edition pipe I know about, but it ain't no Peterson.

And time is running out. By the Peterson spigot later- they will always be available.

if it is any consolation, holding a pipe and visually seeing it is worth spending a little more i have had my share of returns, some pipe sellers are kind enough to send many angled close up shots, as to almost be there in person-----i am a perfectionist and it drives me wild, but i want my pipes perfect and all are not the same
