Zippo soft flame pipe insert follow up

Well a year later and the jet clogged and I tried EVERYTHING to clear it. Nothing worked and it just failed. According to the Zippo warranty you have to purchase it through the website in order to get the 2 year coverage that comes with it. Big downside, so I emptied it, filed it under “G” and purchased a standard gold pipe insert for my brass armor case. Nothing beats the standard insert and without fail they always work.

Now onto the 2nd thing, YES there is a huge difference between the Ronson fluid VS the Zippo fluid. If your using the Ronson, the smell lingers for a long time and will permeate into your pipe tobacco while the Zippo fluid burns with almost zero chemical smell and after you burn off the initial second or two you can’t smell or taste the fluid.

I still have my 2 Dunhill lighters and my 2 DuPont lighters followed by 2 nimrods, 2 Beattie Jet lighters, 1 Rogers Rocket, 1 Peterson lighter, numerous Ronsons, 2 Zippo pipe lighters and 2 standard Zippo’s….Whew that’s a lot of lighters, I enjoy collecting and restoring them a lot.

My first pipe lighter was a Zippo. Still have it. That's a long time. I don't use it much anymore, but it still works fine.

My son has a Zippo pipe lighter, a much newer one. He swears by it.

Any Zippo is fine for a pipe. And the Zippo fluid is indeed better than the others. It's the only fluid that can genuinely light a cigar tastelessly, if you know the trick.

And the trick is to leave the flame run for a second to two before lighting up. Don't ask me the chemical reasons why, but it just works great that way.

Now if Zippo could only offer an accessory to keep the enclosure evaporation-tight. The aftermarket gizmos don't work all that well.

I have seen tricks where people use a cut ziplock bag to make the bottom of the insert of a zippo air tight and people are getting an extra week out of them. I haven’t tried it so YMMV.

Oh and I also forgot to say I have heard people using Vaseline to coat the sleeves a bit to make them air tight as well but I wouldn’t trust that in my pocket as I would be afraid of it melting in my pocket.

Unless you can seal the two halves of the outer case, there is always evaporation through the wick opening itself over time. Slow but sure.

Tried them all. Other than putting the entire lighter into a sealed container (making a light too complicated), you are looking at a refill every 2 weeks or so.

It's just a quirk of the otherwise wonderful Zippo, and most all fluid capillary lighters.

I feel that if I don’t use my Zippo regularly I only give mine a little fluid to last just enough for me to use them. Less waste that way in my mind esp if all I use them is once or twice on the weekend.
