Get into DE wet shaving for less than $50

I just went through this for someone who asked, I figured I'd post it for everyone.

If you're thinking of trying DE wet shaving, don't make low price your primary criteria for your first set of gear. Some of the really low priced stuff just isn't that good. If it doesn't work out it may be the cheap gear's fault. If it does, you'll sell it and get something better pretty quick. Save money from the start, get decent gear. If you don't like it you can sell it and recover some of your costs.

Soap.com has a coupon code: 20TRYSOAP (good for new customers only)

With that you can get an Edwin Jagger DE 89 L and Omega soap and brush kit for $49 delivered. I just looked at this today and that was the price I got. That's a great quality, mild razor, 5 Derby blades, a solid Omega boar brush, brush stand, and soap. I believe it's Proraso soap just rebranded for Omega. All of this is good quality gear. I recommend the lined handle razor over the less expensive smooth handled one just because it's easier to hold on to, especially when you're new at this.

The only other thing you might need is a lather bowl, but any small bowl or coffee mug will do to start.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather you patronize one of our fine supporting vendors, but this is a sweet deal. And if you get hooked, well, you'll be supporting our vendors very soon :)

I agree. My first set up was the VDH set and a Lord razor. I think I laid around $25 for everything just a year ago. It was good enough that it got me hooked on wet shaving.

The VDH set is what I started with. It's ok but I think the Omega is notably better. And yes, if you go vintage you can get a great razor cheap, thou not as cheap as a few years ago.

There are still lots of great deals on vintage Gillettes. This past weekend I went to 2 estate sales and bought 4 Super Speeds, a fat handled Tech, a Super Adjustable and a Slim Adjustable for a total of $8.75, you just need to get away from your computer to find them . My EJ89 hasn't been used since I got my first vintage Gillette.

I enjoy vintage as well as modern razors. The joy in buying a vintage razor for me is that it should almost always be possible to re-sell it for what one paid (or PIF it seeing as most are very inexpensive).
