Geo f trumpers soap

First of all i know theres probably few thread about this.

SWMBO bought me a GFT lime soap in a store here in montreal.
Ive heard about GFT but never looked for any reviews or anything
and when she told me she bought it i came directly here to see what you
fine gentlemens of the wetshaving society thinks about it.

Boy did i didnt see that coming!! I havent tried it yet that im scared
to tell her that the gift she bought me aint that great.

So i was wondering am i condenmed or is there hope ?

What do you think of GFT soap in general ?

It's hit or miss. I wouldn't go into it thinking its going to stink cause you'll risk psyching yourself into thinking so. It's a soap that can be lathered once you learn how it behaves. And if the goal is to not disappoint the wife mix in some good cream and you'll be happy.

Trumpers is fine stuff. There may be problems with various formulations, but give it a shot. Their Lime soap fragrance is great.

Count your blessings, though.....she could have bought you a puck of Williams.

Take a look at the codes on one side of the box. If the lower of the 2 numbers ends in 10 or 11, then my opinion is that it is one of the duds where the lather just evaporates before you can finish your pass. Trumper was once recognised for quality soaps. Personally, and speaking as an Englishman, I won't touch them now unless it is from 2009 or earlier.

I've never tried it, but I hear the new stuff can be difficult to lather.
Whatever you do, don't tell SWMBO that the stuff is junk.

Pretty terrible. Not THE worst shaving soap/cream I've ever tried, but pretty darned close.

+1 for not telling her though. Sell it and move on without her knowing.

Just because a shave soap isn't considered good doesn't mean it's not going to give you a pleasant shave. We have a habit of speaking relatively. There are very few mainstream shaving creams/soaps that are so poor they don't make usable lather. They exist, but they're much less common than you'd think. Take Williams for instance (mentioned above). It is reviled by many, but the lather can shave you just fine if you actually give it a chance. It's simply a matter of holding it to the standards of our favorites and finding it noticeably inferior.

I tried a trumpers sample in early '11 and it was ok. Not terrible or great and pictures of the lather wouldn't have people ooo'ing and ahh'ing, but you could easily get a good shave out of it. Try it a few times and see how it works for you. Chances are good you'll like it just fine if you aren't polluted by twenty people telling you how bad it is.

I actually loved it just finished in May. Try it use it for 2 weeks and then form your opinion I have hated some of the soaps everybody else loves.

IMO, none of the soaps from the three T's are any good. DR Harris, however, is still excellent.

I have had an entirely different experience. TOBS Lavender is one of my favorites and it performs very well. The Sandalwood did as well when I had it in the past. I have and use T&H luxury soap and find that it is a very good product and performs very well for me. Perhaps I have some of the older soaps from GFT, but I find that they perform well for me and have scents that are very pleasant. I think that the Eucris is an outstanding scent and a fine performer. I think that some of the criticism of recent GFT soaps may well be valid given the number of members experiencing problems. As always, YMMV but a blanket statement that none of the Ts are any good is pure hyperbole in my view.

Doug

I only have the Eucris. The lather isn't as "pretty looking" as my other soaps and creams. In fact, it looks pretty weak, but for some reason it works just as well and my skin feels and looks great afterwards.

From a long-term perspective, going back to the mid-sixties, generally speaking, I do think the quality of the the three T's soap has certainly declined and has been surpassed by numerous competitive brands. However, some of their creams continue to hold their own. You mention TOBS Lavender. Lavender happens to be one of my favorite scents and years ago I thought both the TOBS soap and cream were first rate. As a matter of fact, TOBS Lavender cream was my number one cream. Over the years, however, the formulations have changed and I find the soap to be decidedly inferior, both in performance and scent, to brands such as Mike's Hungarian Lavender or Mystic Waters Wild Lavender, to name but a few. I don't even use TOBS Lavender cream any more, as I think the current scent is overwhelmingly artificial and its performance only adequate. I prefer other brands, with CF Lavender at the top of my list. Yes, as always, YMMV.

The good news is that if you use it in the shower it'll be gone quicker. You'll smell like it fresh from the shower so she'll be pleased. Steer her toward a DR Harris soap next time, if possible. Arlington would be a good choice to start. Don't use it in the shower. It's too good.

I bought the GFT Rose soap about 6 months ago and have no problems with it. It's probably my #2 soap behind Harris. With both Harris and GFT soaps I cover the puck with hot water for a few minutes while washing up. Before loading the brush I dump that water into a bowl or cup and use it to dip my brush as needed during the shave. Let us know how you make out after you use it.

About the only Trumpers product I use any more is their coconut oil cream. that is still one of the better products on the market, their soaps on the other hand do not stand up to some of the other brands. They are OK, just not stellar like the coconut oil cream is
