What's new

Gave Cigars A(nother) Shot Tonight!

So, based off of some other suggestion threads, I went and picked up a couple cigars recently: a Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 and an Oliva "O." I haven't had a cigar in almost two years and barely even consider myself a cigar newbie.

Cigars will likely remain a very rare and occasional hobby, but tonight I smoked the Rocky Patel and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I had to smoke outside, away from all the buildings on campus, so I wasn't able to bring a beverage with me (alcoholic or otherwise), so I missed out on that part of the experience, but all in all, a really nice reintroduction to cigars!

So thanks for the recommendations guys and hopefully next week I'll be able to try the Oliva. And while I'd rather not make this into a true hobby, any other suggestions based on my enjoyment of the Patel would be super appreciated. :thumbup1:

I love Rocky Patel's offerings, and I've tried quite an assortment.

I have enough faith in the brand that I just bought an entire box of their natural Juniors (for those quick smokes), without ever having tried one.. As predicted, they're quite good.

Good luck with that, it's a slippery slope. I know a couple guys who only smoke occasionally, and that's because I supply all their cigars. If your buying them yourself they have this freakish ability to multiply in your house and before you know it you have multiple humidors and even coolers filled to the brim and you're leaving work in the middle of the day to drive home a intercept packages before your wife finds them and gives you all kinds of dirty looks. :tongue_sm

Seriously though I'm glad you enjoyed them. I know lots of people that like Patel's, but I am not one of them. The Oliva's however I enjoy very much. You should also consider getting yourself a quality cutter. The plastic single edge ones are not great and you will be surprised how much you'll enjoy a cigar with a clean cut instead of a ragged tear through the head.

I really enjoy the Vintage 1990 and am waiting on getting my hands on a Vintage Royal to give a try.

If you like the Vintage 1990, I would recommend the Don Pepin Garcia Blue line as well.

With the nice weather arriving my thoughts have been turning to afternoons in the back yard with a cigar. A Casa Torano Toro would be a perfect companion while I keep an eye on the first bbq ribs of the season slowly perfecting themselves over the charcoal. Aaahhhhhhh............ I feel better just thinking about it.

I am about to go swing in the backyard hammock and sip on the less than adequate blended scotch that i have here and light up a vintage 1992 robusto.

After reading this post earlier, I couldn't wait to get home and smoke a Patel while drinking a Ketel One with cranberry and lime. Which is what I'm doing now on my front porch.:thumbup1:

Cheers, i am in the hammock with an RP and a glass of Famous Grouse blended scotch

I prefer the Rocky Patel vintage 1992s personally but haven't had an RP i that i hated.

I also enjoyed the 92 better. Indian Tabac by Rocky Patel also has some pretty good offerings for an inexpensive stick. The Cameroon Legend and the Maduro are my favorites of the line.

The main difference I find between the RP 90 and 92 is that the latter seems to be spicy, where the former is spot-on for my tastes. I will also +1 for the AVO...a bit pricy but worth it.

A friend of mine turned me on to the Indian Tabacs. They're excellent for an inexpensive cigar. I didn't realize they were made by RP.

Add one more to the list of RP offerings I enjoy....
