Frog Morton Cellar question

oc_in_fw

Fridays are Fishtastic!
I have read reviews saying there is a hint of whiskey in Cellar due to the block of whiskey barrel they put in the package. My question is- is it present in a freshly opened tin, or should I age it a bit? I assume it was per-aged by McClelland, but I could be wrong. So, what say you?

I look forward to some educated answers! I have an unopened tin of cellar in my den for about 1 month. I was not going to mason jar it until I opened it! I will monitor this thread for my continued brown leaf education!

I hope someone can answer. I haven't opened mine yet, but really really want to.

I don't think the block of wood in the tin makes a difference really. seemed to be more of a gimmick. but it hasn't really been around long enough to tell what aging will do. only been out for like 6 months I think. I put the block of wood in the bottom of the mason jar just in case though.

That said it is an awesome tobacco that I am looking forward to smoking a lot of this upcoming season.

Well, I am no expert. I have purchased and opened a single tin. However, I opened it a meer 2 weeks after it arrived and it definitely has a a whiskey aroma. I mason jarred it with the block. I love this tobacco...I have very little reference because I just started smoking a pipe; but to me it tastes like an English blend with a whiskey aroma and is an overall mild smoke. I think it's great as is. If the whiskey gets stronger with age, then it probably gets better with age.

oh yeah there is a hint of whiskey/bourbon. but I think it is more whatever they did to the tobacco than the block of wood. my stuff in the mason jar smells about the same as new out the tin, or at least not enough difference to note.

Okay, I just smoked a bowl. Wow. You can tell that it is Frog Morton, but there is indeed a hint of whiskey to it when sipped easily. If you try to "chase" that taste by drawing too hard the latakia steps up a bit and overshadows it. But, we should not be doing that with pipe tobacco :001_smile I seriously need to stockpile this stuff.

Owen, this thread has worked its enabling magic. FM Cellar is going on my next order!
I had three bowls before I left for work at 1400. It is magical. The wife noticed, and since she doesn't like me smoking cigarettes (which I don't smoke in the house) she told me to order more on payday.

I have enough tobacoo, infact i have to much tobacco, and now *sigh* i need more tobacco. Thats it someones getting a new pen because of this

every good enable deserves another, if only so i can feel better about myself

I just got done with my 5th bowl of the day. Go for it, James. Don't worry, someone will like a new pen.

On edit: I will be paying close attention in the Nib to see who the next victim is.

So is it a big difference in taste from original FM? Or does one need a Phd. in Mortonology?

When you're done with the tin wet the block of wood and smell it. If it was really a block from a whiskey barrel you'll know right away.
