What's new

For those of you who only get 2 shaves out of a Feather or Med Prep.

...do you really dull the blade by then or do you just toss it because its your style to shave with a real fresh one?

For me it depends on the blade. Some dull quicker than others. My average is three or four shaves per blade.

I am new at DE shaving and am on day 5 of my Feather blade using a Merkur 34c. What a great blade. I did notice 2 small weepers this morning but think I can get one more day out of it. I have a persona med pro blade in my fatboy razor which I use when I travel on business. Tomorrow will be my 3rd shave with the med. I am interested to see how the med compares to the feather when used in the same razor. I haven't been shaving long enough to find out. Both seem superior, IMO, to Astra and Gillette 7 o'clock yellow. After reading the reviews I am not even sure I want to try some of the other brands like derby and shark. Will I be disappointed after using the feather?

@ Ron do you smoke those Chesterfields, or are you like me and just have nostalgia for popular brands of the past?

Feathers only give me 2 good shaves, on the 3rd they start tugging. Gillette yellows give a solid 4 shaves before they need to be swapped. Haven't tried the med preps yet... still working through samples.

I have not heard of a single shaver who only gets two shaves from a Med Prep - I can go 7 three-pass shaves, but often change after 5. I go three with a Feather.

Feathers and Med preps are some of the longer lasting blades for me. If I stretch it out I could probably go 5-6 on the Feather, and 7-8 on the Med Preps.

Yep. For me, 2 shaves from a feather. By the 3rd shave, it is uncomfortable and usually results in an irritated neck.

That was Dad's brand.

Those were among my Dad's favourites!

OP, great thread.

I get seven smooth shaves out of each Feather in my EJ DE89. Excellent value for money IMHO. Not only that, Feathers are MY best blades, along with Polsilver SI and Super Iridium.

YMMV and all that, of course.

Every blade I use seems to lose sharpness after the 2nd shave. I almost never go more than 3 shaves with a blade. Feather's and GSB's feel like they lose sharpness after the first shave. I toss them both after 2. I'll take a Super Iridium to 3.

+1 on this I get 5-6 full, comfortable close shaves with both meds and labs. Feather I never find to be comfortable, but I can get 2-3 close shaves before it becomes too much. Feathers not my thing at all.

I'm getting ~6 shaves out of both the Feathers and Meds, which are the only blades i use. If I remember, I flip the blade over after 3 uses.

For me, the first shave with a Feather is too sharp, the second shave is perfection, the third is less so, then I toss it.

Hi Ron, I can only get about 3 shaves out of a Feather. Like many before me, the first shave is very sharp and diminishes from there. My everyday blade are Astra's with an occasional Gillette Silver Blue.

Med preps I usually use for about 3 shaves then toss primarily because I don't want to deal with the irritaiton caused by dulling. Feathers I find ridiculously sharp but I only get about 2 shaves then toss out of necessity.
