What's new

First try with open comb, Gillette New Long comb = success

I've been shaving this week with my 1930's Gillette NEW with the long comb. What a great razor! I've gotten my best shaves yet with this cool looking razor. The only issue I have is that the knurling on the handle is a little light, so it can be slippery.

I've also got a NEW with a short comb. What are the differences in shaves with the short vs. the long comb?

Where is this Brotherhood I hear about every now and then?

I can't tell the difference in the shaves. I'm certain there must be, but I don't feel it.

A lot of different style handles fit those heads, just saying.

I have both short and long combs. I think the long comb looks cooler but I like the shave of the short comb better (it looks great too.). The shave with both is smooth, can still feel the blade and with a few passes BBS. If there is any difference, for me the short comb is just a hair more aggressive. Don't be afraid to buy one off Ebay that has the plating stripped off. Look for it being in good condition- no bent teeth, deep scratches or mismatched parts. When you get it, you can have it replated or just keep it like it is. I had one replated in rose gold and it looks like it just came out of the box. Beautiful razor. I mostly use my unplated one. As you use it, the copper begins to change color which to me personalizes the razor, adds character and I think is very attractive. If any green or black buildup on the metal takes place, just use a firm toothbrush and it cleans right off. Most of these razors are 80+ years old and are in great shape. These are a piece of history which can be passed down. Tip- if you get one with original plating that isn't too bad, don't replate it. The process of removing plating can often result in smoothing out the knurling which is undesirable.

I love the NEW, whether LC or SC! You'll find differing opinions as to what differences folks find between the long and short comb versions, but the general consensus is that the SC is a tad more aggressive. The beauty is that you can try them both and find how they work for you.

There are a couple things you can do about that slippery handle. As already mentioned, you can grab yourself a different handle. Any handle that fits other Gillette three-piece razors should work with either NEW. A less expensive option is to rub your fingers on an alum block, which will give you more grip (it's pretty astounding how well that works).

Enjoy!
