What's new

First shave with my new Merkur 39C

I received a Merkur 39C for my birthday on Monday, I'd dropped hints and was hoping to get it for Christmas rather than my birthday but my wife managed to get one quickly and so there it was!

I've read all about the 39C, about the reputation and the fact that many people describe it as a '10' for aggressiveness and I was feeling a little cautious when I went to shave this afternoon.

I used CF Lime cream, a great cream but with the amount I need to use due to our hard water, I'll probably get through the small 50g tub with less than ten shaves. But I digress.

My two current favourite blades are the ASCO red/blue and the Feather but I decided to try something different so I loaded an Astra SP. These are a blade I want to like but was never overly impressed by their performance in my EJ DE89L.

I did my usual three passes, felt for any areas which needed a touch up and there they were as normal on my neck. I completed the touch up, rinsed and aftershave balmed my boat.

Honest opinion?

It felt little different to the DE89L. I needed my usual WTG, XTG and ATG passes followed by the normal touch up. The Astra SP felt better than when used in the Edwin Jagger razor but I don't see what the fuss is about slant razors. No irritation, no redness, just a good shave.

And that's what we're here for. A good shave.

To round off, here's a couple of photographs of a great looking razor.

My Slant gives me a closer shave per pass than my EJ89, and I think it depends heavily on the angle of razor to face. But other than that I just shave, no "special precautions" after the first two overly cautious shaves, and haven't been bit yet. This is not a razor to fear for any reason.

Astra blades work great for me in that razor, it's very efficient and the Astra is a smoothe blade, good choice in the 39 and the blade

This is what most of us slant fans have been saying for quite a while now... Glad you discovered it and hopefully this will persuade others to try this great razor! Another area this razor really shines in is in taking down multi day growth. If for example you didn't shave for 3 or so days I think you would definitely notice a difference in how much more effortlessly the slant would remove the growth as opposed to most other razors. This is what I have found anyways.

Wonderful pictures by the way! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your shaves.

Interesting - When I first got the DE, I was only planning on shaving once or twice a week at most but now I'm looking forward to my daily shave. I don't think I could go three days without a shave as I'd miss it too much!

The photographs were taken with an iPhone. When people say "sorry for the rubbish phone picture" I wonder what they're doing to take such bad photographs, I get superb pictures out of the iPhone :biggrin1:

Glad you had a great shave with the slant. I always get BBS face and dome shaves with my slant razors.

I totally agree. The only time I don't shave nowadays is if I don't have the time for it. I enjoy my daily shaves as well. Who would have thought...

It's all in the lighting. The newer smart phones can take great pictures but the lighting usually has to be decent.

Wow forget about that Beautiful 39c I know its an awesome shaver and not agressive just effecient, and there is a difference, But anyways im in love with that adorable little boxed Robot, I want one, He looks Kool

The second shave with the Astra SP was just as good as the first but I didn't need the touch up pass to get my BBS shave. The only difference was that I used MWF soap instead of CF Lime cream. I see a bulk purchase of Astra SP blades in the future on the strength of this.

Astra is my "gold standard" blade and I judge all other blades against it (better than an Astra - not as good as an Astra)

You can get 100 through amazon for around $10.

Rapira in a 37C gives a very similar feel for me and they are a little cheaper at the moment.
