What's new

First post is a tip!

Thanks to the mods and contributors for creating and maintaining an excellent site. Over the past few weeks, it has been shown that this is truly a wonderful resource and friendly community of fine gentlemen and ladies.

After browsing hundreds of threads, I noticed that that there are many people who mill their soaps to conform the soap into a container of their choice, and then choose to bowl lather. I have done this with good results, but began wondering why continue to mold the soap into the shape of the container? Why not leave the milled soap in its shredding form and simply transfer the milled soap into the container of choice? This would have several distinct advantages; 1. you can control the exact amount of soap you use to lather (adding more shreds if your lather is too watery), 2. you increase the surface area of the mass of soap having to mix with less vigor and time, 3. some shreds will get lodged in the bristles of your brush and benefit from the agitation of the hair and water deeper within the brush (less work for you).

So, on to the tip: (clearly this works best if you bowl later) leave your milled soap in its shredded form and place it into the vessel of choice. Then shake, pinch, or scoop out an amount into your lathering bowl and add your desired amount of water. Mix to the desired pre-lather, or full lather.

I've found this to be a technique to very quickly build lather from any milled soap.

Once again, thanks to everyone for making B&B such a great place. And thanks for reading and "Thank you for your support." - Bartles & James.

One soap maker sells soap flakes, I'm guessing for the same purpose? I can't recall who it is off the top of my head, but I'll check into it.
In the meantime, welcome to B&B!

EDIT: OK, I was faster than I thought:lol: Here's the flakes I was thinking of.

Well that sure took the "bright" out of my idea.

Didn't mean to steal your thunder:blushing: Honestly, I had no idea why they were selling flakes until your post explained it! I'm going to have to try that idea with some of the leftover "dust" from my Williams milling experiment.

I haven't tried soaps yet , just some shaving creams at the moment. But welcome fellow NYCer.
