First Merkur Blade

Yep, I've been wetshaving for years, and I've always avoided Merkur blades, because there are few, if any, good reviews of those blades on the forums.

Anyway, popped one in my first gen iKon OC a few days ago and I was pleasantly surprised. Nice smooth shave. Not terribly sharp blades but they remind me of Red IP's. I think the blade does well in a heavy, medium-aggressive razor.

I won't go out and buy a bunch, but if they turn up in my stash, I won't actively avoid them in the future. :biggrin1:

I used the one that came with my Progress for four very close and comfortable shaves. The reasons I don't go back are 1. price and 2. Astra SPs

I don't think these blades are too bad. Like others have said, they are a bit more expensive and not quite as sharp but they do seem to work well in the heavy razors. I find I prefer less sharp blades in those for early morning shaves when I may not have my techinque at it's best.

I have about 3 Merkur blades that came with Merkur razors, but I dare not try them after reading their reviews.

Just give them a go; some like them and some don't and the not-likers are pretty loud but they might be a blade you like after all!

On any given blade there are good and bad reviews but reviews can never say where you stand in the matter; try for yourself!

I had exactly the same experience. Bad press about Merkur blades was so rampant that I didn't even try the free blade that came with my new 38C razor way back when.... It wasn't until I found another Merkur blade in a PIF package from another member that I gave them a shot. They are fantastic blades! OK, there are better blades out there for less money, but Merkur blades are fine blades in every other respect. I posted a similar question many months ago, and most replies from sage mebers indicated concern about price, and not quality....

I think that is the only real issue at hand.... If I could buy Merkur blades at Astra prices, I'd be the happy owner of several hundred of them...

my first de purchase was a merkur 34hd, with included merkur blade...
did NOT go well, used for two shaves, must've been my inexperience
have not gone back since.. i will shortly

New to DE shaving and only tried a few blades (Astra, Feather, Derby, etc..) but I am really liking the Merkur blade and EW DE89 combination, definitely think it's a underrated blade.

1st blade came free with merkur 34C - not good.
2nd blade came free with the progress - smooth.

Have not tried any since then but don't think I will buy any (price!), especially when the cheaper astra green can do the same job.
