What's new

Fill in the blank: If I like . . .

EDIT: Very funny you all! But can we help a guy with a serious question!? :biggrin1:

I know Obsessed knows you all but someone newer to this forum might refrain from asking their questions if the responses are jokes that put down the writer's favorite scents.

Also, if HB was good enough for the Marquis de Sade, it is good enough for me. To me HB is a very interesting scent with a very interesting history. In no way a scent to be dismissed out of hand. And lots of stuff smells like HB. SMW is harder for me to find equivalents though.

Anyone have any ideas on SMW? Vertigo1234, why MPG RdV? One heck of a vet, but why similar to HB and SMW?

HB--Floris 89, DC 1913, AdP. But you know those.

SWM--I would think Creed Himilaya, but apparently I am not right about that. Notes for SMW say tea and blackcurrant. I am not sure it smells of that to me. I do not know what it smells like, but I like it, too. It seems pretty unique to me.

EDIT: I think Luca Turin called SMW metallic. Not sure I get that either or why that would be a negative anyway.

I've only sampled them, but I'm guessing if you like Hammam you might like Czech + Speake 88 or Amouage Lyric (for men), and if you like SMW you'd like Creed Vetiver, Mugler Cologne or L'Occitane Vert (green tea) or Vert a la Menthe, which you still see on ebay sometimes.

Just don't ask about Lilac Vegetal. There hasn't been a serious response around that one since Nixon. Also it smells like a dirty diaper buried in mushrooms.

I think we've got a rose issue here. HB is all rose and baby oil, all the time; SMW is everything but. On the other hand, I seem to remember that you got rid of your Floris 89, didn't you? HB and SMW would make me think you're looking for something that maintains a rose note, but does so in a more complex frag. Robbie brings up the usual suspects. I don't care much for AdP myself, but have you tried the DC 1913? It might give you something you will like. The Perfume Court also has a nice rose sampler. I've been slowly working my way through it and it's already inspired me to pick up bottles of Black Aoud and Attar.

I guess I should explain why I mentioned both of these frags in the OP, since they are in fact quite different. I like both very much, and although I wouldn't wear either one all the time, in thinking about my fragrance explorations over the last year or so, I realized that they were the two for which I most distinctly remember catching a whiff during the day and stopping to take a deeper sniff and thinking how nice they smelled. (For me, at least, the HB drydown moves away from the rose and baby oil to a warmer, mellower scent.) I guess I was wondering if there is anything that somehow captures the essence of both, but I also welcome suggestions for frags that are similar to either.

I did get rid of the Floris 89. That's a frag I keep trying and thinking I like, only to realize later that it's just not for me. It may be the nutmeg.

DC 1913 is a weird one for me. I've sampled it several times, and I really like it, but for whatever reason I just don't see myself ever wearing it.

And I was never crazy about C&S No. 88, but I may need to give it another try.

A number of the other suggestions sound interesting. I'm going to look into them. (I've been itching to try some new stuff and maybe branch out to some different brands.)

And I can handle the HB jokes. I think a thick skin is a requisite for wearing it! (The Knize's point is well-taken, however. I'm still amazed that cyber fights have actually broken out over people's opinions on things like Tabac and Williams.)

YMMV, but to me SMW is all about citrus, green and herbal teas, blackcurrants, and the famous "ink" note that no one can really seem to identify fully, but ties the scent together so nicely. It's fresh, clean, with an earthiness and subversive edge that I didn't like at first, but after wearing for about an hour, grew to like.

Hammam is sweet florals, mostly rose.

I know there's some psychological factors in play with it, but Tommy Girl really is a good one to try if you like the above two scents. One of the few that I agree with Turin on - it has suffered from marketing and from its gender niche, but in all actuality is high quality and an excellent "tea floral" fragrance. The tea from SMW reminded me of the green tea in TG, and the way the tea note develops into a white floral reminds me somewhat of the sweet dustiness of Hammam's bouquet. I'm wearing TG now, and I can see why it's meant for the ladies, but don't think it's really as gender-specific as its marketing makes it seem. It is no less unisex than any of Creed's scents, that's for sure.

Your point about the think skin re:HB has been medically verified. See your dermatologists before trying it!

and RE: jokes, in fairness to guys like Phil and many others I don't really think LV is that bad. I would hope the trash talking was taken as a goofy pile-on, but I know some members really do love the stuff.
