Yes. Put a piece of 1 mil Kapton on the omote (the soft side) when you hone it.

From what I gather, yes. Though I am not overly familiar with them.
I just looked at the price of some of the Iwasaki's on Ebay. They are not cheap.

Well, I took the wise advice and got one of each. They are user grade, mind you, but will work for now.
The Iwaskai was a bit of a gamble, the auction picture showed crud near the edge that looked like overheating, but I took a swing with a low bid and got it for around 120. After cleaning and sharpening I found that it was a perfectly straight blade and took a good edge. I’m only 5 shaves in, but each shave has been better than the last and it still passes hht, so I may have dodged a bullet on the blade temper issue.
The Fili was a bit harder to work up. One side made perfect contact with the stone, while the other side only made contact in the middle. It took a bit of work to get the toe and heel of the one side in shape, but it is now producing a nice hht all along the blade. I haven’t shaved with it yet because I am still testing the Iwasak, but I think it will be a keeper.
