Feather Portable

I normally use my Parker 22R, which is the first and only razor I've had for months now after starting the wet shaving process. Until...I decided to go out on a whim and look for a travel sized razor. I stumbled upon the Feather Portable, and quickly did some research on it, and decided to pick one up before they're all sold out since from what I can tell, Feather has discontinued production of them.

The desire to shave with it initially began out of curiosity, to see how it would fare against my Parker. There are times that I find my Parker too mild, and the urge to push harder has always struck me. I took the Super Iridium from my Parker and placed it into the Feather Portable and decided to give it a shot. No good though, I must have taken half my skin off because the razor is much more aggressive, and left my face burning for a good day. Two days later, I came back to try the Feather Portable again, this time with the Indian Wilkinson blades, and behold, I just stumbled upon the best shave of my life. No burn, no irritation, smooth shaving all the way, and ended up loving it.

This razor is quite the bang for the buck, and since the shave with the Indian Wilkinson was so comfortable, I'm thinking of making it my daily razor. I never thought I would replace a normal sized razor, with a smaller travelling razor. So here is where I ask, is there any possible way to modify the head of the feather portable with a different handle? It's not a dealbreaker if I can't find one, but that is the last thing holding me back from a truly superb shave every night or so.

The "portable" moniker is more about it's ability to break down into 3 pieces to fit in it's small case, than it's actual overall size. The handle on the portable is only slightly shorter than that of a typical Gillette Tech.

No modification necessary. It should be able to fit on any handle from just about any 3 piece razor made. You can mate it with the Ball End handle from a Gillette Tech. The Fat Handle from a Gillette Tech. The Ball End Handle from a Gillette New/ Old Type, and any number of Merkur handles.

You can have "cooncatbob" make you a custom handle for it, that suits your fancy as well.

The feather portable has become one of my daily drivers. I use the portable head on one of Bob's Bull Mastiff handles and it works great for me.

I think I need to find a different blade as the Shark blade that worked so well in my Parker 82 cut me all to heck with the Feather Portable that I picked up. I boxed mine back up and haven't used it since.

Feather Portable + Super Iridium... famous last words .

I used mine for the first with the usual, mild blades (unmarked Personnas) I use in the 34C, and was very surprised to get a closer shave. It really is a great razor, though it is a bit more aggressive than expected.

There are several posts on the Portable and nearly all of them carry the same advice: the Portable will punish poor technique. I found that to be 100% true with mine. The best advice given on the other threads is to hold the very bottom of the handle to make sure you're not applying any extra pressure. I too got cut up by a Shark SC until I read those posts and changed my grip to avoid pressure. Was a night and day difference.

Feather Portable on the Left and Gillette Tech on Right.

Yeah, I think I'm going to let it sit for a little while until I feel like my technique has improved a bit!

Just add a longer handle and it no longer a portable shaver. I got a couple from Cooncatbob, it complements this razor

Every single one of my detachable handles fits the Feather Portable.

You can see from the pictures above that the Gillette Tech is slightly larger that the Feather Portable, but the Gillette is actually lighter (48g) than the Feather (53g) due to the Tech's hollow handle.

The Fat Handle Tech handle is certainly slightly larger (in both diameter, and length) than the Feather Portable's handle. The Ball End Tech handle however is only slightly shorter than that of the Portable. :tongue_sm

It's one of my favorites and I agree... It's not just a travel razor. As stated above, if you find the handle to slim, you can interchange it with a Tech handle or another beefier handle. Personally, I like the stock handle. When I shave with the Feather I grip it with my thumb, index and middle finger, right near the end of the handle.

This is also my current favorite razor. Ive only used a Edwin Jaegger DE89L, a Schick Krona, and the portable, and I prefer the portable over both of them. I really like the size, the great knurling on the handle, so I have excellent grip on it, the lower profile head so it makes shaving my mustache area easy, and I find the aggressiveness level to be spot on. Plus its less than $10.

I guess i need to find another one... :frown2: After giving 2 away as "conversion kits", everytime i read a post extolling the portable i die a little inside... What a great razor... :crying:
