Faulty slim adjustable needs repair

I have a slim that i cannot get the top open. The tto just spins around with no stops in either direction. Can this be repaired or do i bin it?

Sounds like stripped threads.

Slims were not made to be disassembled, but there is a technique that I read in another post last month. I haven't had a razor "junk" enough to try the technique . . .

Yours sounds like it needs major parts or is a parts donor itself. Sorry . . .

Maybe?

Start with a one hour boil in hot water + dishwashing soap to free up as much internal garbage as possible.

Get a stiff paperclip and bend it into a U that is slightly smaller in span than the diamater of the handle of your slim. Look at the bottom of the handle, note the two notches in the bottom plate? Insert the two ends of your paperclip and then use a pair of channel lock pliers to secure the paperclip while you twist counterclockwise.

The bottom plate is under spring pressure so be careful, eventually it will pop free and the spring will come out with it. You should now be able to pull the door assembly along with the center shaft to which the plate/nut you just removed attaches. Give the razor another good boiling now in pieces and use a toothbrush/dental pick (GENTLY) to clean the threads that you can see (possibly some CLP on a cotton swab to help) - a good scrubbing bubbles bath might also help at this stage.

Once you've cleaned things up you should have a pretty good visual indication of the threads that allow the door assembly to move up and down. If you want to take pics of the parts disassembled I'm sure we can help with your troubleshooting. Guessing it's a broken spring or stripped threads inside the TTO knob - in theory you should be able to replace either from another junked out slim adjustable... but it could also just need a more focused cleaning than the usual boil/mineral oil/scrubbing bubbles/simple green/etc.. stuff that takes care of the simpler issues.

For visual aids, I'm using the instructions for Fatboy disassembly from memory that are posted here: http://vintagesaws.com/fatboy/fatboy.html - same should apply to your slim.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. I can actually open the gates if i push the end cap in a bit, but it doesn't open gates equally. It is a two handed job, so getting a blade in is impossible. The spring is quite strong so i think that maybe the threads have been stripped. I'll have a look at the disassembly of the fat boy.

Just one note, the Slim as well as later model Fatboys do not have the slots for disassembly .. I have seen an altenative method but haven't tried myself ..http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=46559&highlight=slim+disassembly
but it may just be gunked up inside, so I would soil/simmer first ..
