FatBoy Question

First of all, the adjustable is nice. But, you can do that with a Slim. A Fat Boy has a weight advantage also. Then, there is that factor that can't be explained. It just feels cool.

So all "fatboys" are adjustable?

Yes. See photo:

FatBoy is the nickname for a particular, heftier adjustable Gillette safety razor. It's much like the Slim in appearance and function, but one which took a couple extra trips to the buffet if you get my meaning.

I think it's desirable because of its heft, and overal aesthetic as much as its ability to provide good shaves. There are other great shavers, but the FatBoy is something of a magic recipe.

Alas, I went through a FatBoy binge and subsequent purge. I still have one, and I have gifted one. It's in my regular rotation, and I enjoy using it. My advice is to be patient in acquiring one. It isn't a fool proof BBS or anything like that, and some folks like to demand a pretty penny. Every once in a while, however, you'll find a good deal.

Fatboys were only made for 4 years, then replaced by Slims which were in production for 9 or 10 years. FB's are both older and rarer, therefore command more money.

Why they command so much more is a issue of psychology more than anything.

I briefly owned a Fatboy. I also owned a Slim at the time. My Slim shaved better than the Fatboy, so I sold the Fatboy. I later sold the Slim. I currently own a Gillette Super Adjustable (aka a Black Beauty) which was the newest production of the 3 types of Gillette Adjustables.

In my opinion, it shaves the best of the 3 razors.

In my opinion, Fatboys are over-hyped; other razors shave just as well, if not better. :tongue_sm

Once again, we agree. I have all three of the adjustable razors that you mention and use them all. I also have a Y-3 (birth year) Speed which I wish was my favorite, however, my "go to" is my long black handled Super adjustable. The length is probably a concession to my Trac II days.

The Fatboy is my preferred DE razor at the moment. The adjustability is a definite plus, but the extra weight is probably the biggest reason I like it better than some of my other vintage Gillettes.

Also, it does look awesome, and it tends to be the one I leave on display in the bathroom even if I'm not using it that day. :thumbup1:

+1 to this entire post.

Though Fatboys get too much attention these days due to their relative scarcity, they're still excellent shavers. Fairly priced ones still appear in the wild - grab one if you don't have to pay too much.
