Blade for Fatboy

I have a Fatboy that was restored by BackRoadsGold. I use the same blades I use with other razors, with an eye toward what number it will be dialed to. The lower number the sharper the blade, the higher numbers get less sharp/smoother blades. When there is less growth I set the dial at 2-5 it gets a Wizamet, Nacet or Permasharp. With bigger numbers and more whiskers I usually go to a Lab Blue or Dorco Prime.

Edit: I did the change the setting between passes thing for a while but eventually stopped... a really mild blade at 1-3 doesn't do anything and a Permasharp at 9 will take a layer of skin.

Oh, and of course YMMV.

Let me recount the tale...

Months ago I decided the day's shave would be the Fatboy and a Derby Premium.

And that's me in the 48-72 hour range of growth.

So I showered. Then shaved. And in this instance I decided to ignore all that "let the weight of the razor do the work" nonsense.

I was bearing down. Really grinding it in, like it was a cartridge razor. Dragging that sucker across my face and neck. And it was set to "9".

But I wasn't paying a price for doing that. It was working.

The end result, three passes plus cleanup "search and destroy", was the absolute finest example of BBS I've ever managed. But it doesn't stop there! Rubbing on the alum block produced no feedback. My skin was...fine. Witch hazel application was uneventful. The aftershave splash was akin to tap water. There was no sting.

I have come close to recreating this a few times with that combination, but not so far exactly.

Derby Extras give nice shaves -- if you can put up with the pulling! I don't have one on the schedule for a while yet, but I also suspect that like Lord blades they require a steeper shaving angle than Gillette blades do.

As far as what blade to use in a FatBoy, I've not found any that don't work yet (assuming the razor isn't bent, lol). The Treet Carbon won't last long and will need to be washed and dried every shave or it will rust on the edge, the others are stainless. I got 70+ shaves on a Sputnik, not a stellar blade but not bad either. The best part of adjustables is that you can use any blade in them with the correct setting and get a good, comfortable shave. Usually different for each brand.
