Fatboy or mergress?

Hi guys,

I was wanting to hear your opinions on fatboys compared to mergress razors. What will shave better, closer, smoother?

Is one more aggressive than the other?

My vote is for Mergress. Merkurs are more aggressive than Gillettes. I could never get a close shave with a fatboy but I got BBS sahves with ease with a mergress.

As for which will shave better for you, nobody can say for sure. It's a personal preference thing. Have you used any DEs before or will this be your first?

First of all, it's vintage! When I started back shaving, my first razor was a Merkur HD (still have it, btw). I had a Mergress once and liked it fine. Shaved really well. Right now I'm all about old razors and I like the Fatboy dialed up to 9 with a Red Pack Israeli. I get a BBS everytime. But it's really what shaves best to you. You won't go wrong with either:thumbup1:

If this is your first razor, cost may be a consideration. A mergress is going to run $90 while you can get a fatboy in good shape from a member here for $20-40.

If you want to go the Merkur route you could also get a stock progress for cheaper to see how you like it first before having it modified with the steel knob.

I have a 34c and a superspeed I prefer the 34c for sure. The gillette won't cut as smooth.

If you like the HD better than a slim then you probably want to go with the mergress or a futur.

I like the look of vintage gillettes and they def have that cool factor being vintage but the tech, slim and fatboy I've tried all didn't give me as good a shave as I've had from any of the merkurs.

+1 ... I collect vintage Gillettes and other brands, but I SHAVE with modern Merkurs. They're not as pretty to look at, they don't have the nostalgia factor, but they WORK.

You shave your BACK? Sheesh. TMI, friend, TMI.:lol:

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

He must have really long arms or he has that razor mounted to something and he just bends his knees. How do you get to that spot right in the middle of your back? And how many mirrors do you need to see what you are doing?

+1 I have both vintage Gillettes and Henckels, Hoffritz DE razors (they look like modern Merkur models). Non Gillette razors are more aggressive than my Superspeeds, Techs, Slim Adj @9 however only Fatboy is as bold as them.
