Fatboy Handle Drop

I've just acquired another Fatboy (on the right).

Compared to my other Fatboy on the left, when the TTO dial is fully open, there's about 1/16" play in the knob (can move up/down ~1/16"). ON both razors, the blade adjusts fine, silo doors close and there's a nice feeling 1/4 turn lock. Is this normal or does razor on the right have a problem?

No problem at this point with the one on the right . . . the play in the knob comes from the crimp (just above the knob on the handle tube) not being as tight as the other one. The tolerance range on the crimp is quite wide . . . it is also is a potential wear point. If the crimp becomes too loose, eventually the TTO knob will drop out rather than the doors opening when operated. When that happens, you have to push up on the knob to get the doors open.

The best way to fix it is to use the backside of a butter knife (resting in the crimp groove) to "roll" the razor back and forth with the head hanging off a countertop while pushing down on the knife. This will tighten up the crimp. Be careful not to over tighten it, as that can shorten the handle by a thousandth of an inch or so if you draw too much metal into the crimp groove.

Sounds like your razor works well and should have many years of service left in it! Enjoy!!

I have this same problem with my Fatboy - can you please illustrate the crimp that I'm supposed to tighten?

It is the groove in the handle just above the knob. I use the backside of a butter knife to "roll" the razor back and forth while pressing down. (Hang the head over the edge of the countertop while rolling.) Use a soft cloth between the knife and razor to prevent scratching.
