Fatboy and Slim-are they the same except for the handle?

I'm contemplating getting either a Fatboy, a Slim, or both. Can anyone tell me if there is any difference in these razors other than the size of the handle?

Thanks!

Joe

Well the handle is the obvious difference, as well as the fact that the fatboy is heavier. They have slightly different heads and I THINK the blade gaps are different at corresponding settings. I'm sure there are others, but I'll leave that to the experts lol

I have a regular Fatboy E4 and a Cerakoted Slim M4 that I shave with. Can't tell much of a difference between them. Shave with both of them at the same settings "7-7-5" and get a great shave with each. I like the looks of my FB better and the feel of it in my hand better but that doesn't affect shave quality. Others may have a different answer.

Both the handle and the head designs are different. The Fat Boy is heavier and bulkier all around and has a higher profile head. I have and use them both but I'm finding the Slim is a little easier to use especially for the upper lip and other tight spots. Both are great razors.

I will agree with GlennConti. Seen no differences so far. In fact I prefer the Slim, but YMMV as always.
The sort answer is own them both, use them when you want.

Thanks, everybody. That's good information. I've looked around enough to know that the Fatboy is in fashion. Pricier on eBay. I read one B&B thread in which some folks were claiming that the Fatboy was over-rated in comparison to the Slim, and that the over-rating was largely a matter of the relative rarity of the Fatboy, which was produced for only a few years.

I know a lot of folks say they like the heftier feel of the Fatboy. I can see that. But then one thing that was mentioned in that other thread was the reason the Fatboy was produced for only a few years, whereas the Slim was produced for many years: that earlier generations preferred the Slim. So, we have a current preference for the Fatboy set off in tension with an earlier preference for the Slim.

I suspect that one reason previous generations preferred the Slim was what SteveWy mentioned: the higher, more rounded dome of the Fatboy makes it harder to get in close right under the nose. I hear that also stipulated as a main reservation (besides price) about the Merkur Vision. Good for the Giant at the top of the beanstalk, but a little more bulky than Jack and his friends find convenient.

I'm going to get one or the other. I'd prefer to get both, but whatever is left of my frugality (after this latest spell of acquisition disorder) is tugging at my elbow, pleading with me to show restraint, and whispering, "You can always get it later. You can only shave once a day anyway. You only got the Mergress two days ago. The Gillette NEW and the Merkur Slant both came in the mail today, and you're still waiting for the Proraso Little Bastone. How many faces do you have? Can't you wait?" Sort of like a wife in a dingy cotton dress holding feebly at her husband's elbow, pleading with him not to go down to the pub tonight. Poor bedraggled lass, so pathetic, so ineffectual.

 Good luck man, but you WILL end up with both of them. Even if it is only briefly.

The Fatboy I was waiting on this evening jacked up to more than $50 in the couple of hours before the closing bell. So I cancelled out of that one. The next one up was a Slim in good condition, up to $22 as closing time approached. With 20 seconds left to go, I put in a bid at $27.53, and it was knocked down at $24.29. I'd call that a pretty reasonable price.

That was my first successful effort at an eBay auction. I went in cold the other day, a babe in the woods, looking for a Gillette NEW, and got my clock cleaned. Some of the guys on BOTOC told me how to go about bidding, advising the strategy I used to get this Slim.

How does it feel to succeed at the auction? Well, I'm sure you all know. It feels great!

The seller of this particular Slim said he wasn't sure the razor had ever been used, but time leaves some stains on a finish, even for a razor left in a virgin condition (think of any old maiden aunt you might have had). Again, B&B to the rescue. I read up today on methods for cleaning up an old razor. There's a particularly good Wiki on it, simple, easy. He had used the older, more complicated methods, and described them, but says he has now shifted over to just using the MetalWax Tri-Pack. Sounds like a winner. I ordered some.

You have good taste in razors, in my opinion.
Anyway, I am not a big fan of adjustable razors, but I have a birth year Slim and a birth year Fatboy. FWIW, I prefer the Slim.

I like the shorter handle on the Fatboy, it makes the razor feel more precise in my hands. As for the head profile, they both work well for me.
