Family Dollar "Old Spice"

Just found out from my barber the Family Dollar spice aftershave is the original formulation Old Spice. Any thoughts? From what I can remember, it does smell like the original. $1.75. Sorry, guess I should have put this in the aftershave area!

I am skeptical only because I assume the original formula is patented. However, it was released in the 1930's if I remember correctly.....so maybe the patent expired? I am not exactly sure how that works. Regardless, if you think it smells better than the current Old Spice, I say use it.

This product has been widely discussed here. It is generally accepted that it smells more like the original shulton's old spice than the current P&G old spice. However, I find that the scent doesn't stick around as long as the current product. My solution... mix the two.

There was a chemical analysis done in a brilliant post that you'll find in a sticky on the aftershave forum, comparing modern, vintage, and Vi-Jon (Family Dollar) Old Spice.

Of course, what you like is the final say for you.

The family dollar version is preferred by many here, myself included. I do like the P&G current version, just not as much.

Fortunately for me, either the formulas aren't that much different, or more likely my nose isn't sensitive enough, that they all smell enough like my memory of Old Spice that I enjoy them all.

Some excellent mixing ideas here. Might have to try mixing some Vi John with some vintage Avon 'Spicy' and see what happens. :)

I like the family dollar version! I really cannot speak to how it compares to vintage versions, although I have had little bits of OS from a wide variety of years.

+1 - I never used aftershave on a regular basis until I took up DE shaving last year. Just a couple of cases of dousing myself with a bit too much aftershave and cologne in college. I don't have any great nose for the stuff, so I just get what's cheap and not particularly offensive. The Family Dollar Old Spice clone and Dollar General Brut clone work out well for me.

Okay guys. You convinced me. I passed by a Family Dollar today and I just had to check it out. I must say... not bat at all. For $1.47, I can't complain.

This some good information. My Grandpa wore Old Spice before he passed away. I smelled some about four years ago and it didn't smell the same to me. I will check out the cheaper stuff and see how it smells to me.
