Experience with Classicshaving.com's Honing Svc?

Has anybody used the honing service from ClassicShaving? I recently bought my first straight and it wasn't QUITE shave ready ! I'd like to send it to be honed and have a minimal hassle with doing so. I have ordered from CS on several occasions and always had good service, but as always YMMV. Any thoughts or other recommendations?

Oh, and I realize that variations of this thread have been done to death, so I apologize in advance.

No offense needed, but is this your first razor? If so how do you know it is not sharp? Also being from Classic, did it have a sticker on it saying that it was honed by Lynn Abrams?

i'd suggest you give them a call and see if they would take it back for a rehone.

how do you know it is not shave-ready? i've seen dozens of threads like this and the ones who are followed through always seem to end up with the person eating his words later on when they realize it's not the razor at fault.

Does Lynn still do Classic's honing?

not sure, few months ago it was him and chris, but they may have even more, or completely different guys now.
i guess one can ask classicshaving who hones for them.

Did the op even say that he got his razor from Classic?

And I'll +1 the whole it's probably already sharp thing. My first razor felt dull as all get out but I knew it wasn't because I trusted the word of the guy who sold it. Sure enough it was sharp.

I didn't buy the razor from CS, I bought it on the Mall here on B&B. As for sharpness, it catches and hangs up on my beard. When I tested it on my forearm, it was like shaving with a spoon. The only reason I asked about CS was because I've bought from them before and been satisfied, and they were listed as places to have honing done by someone on the forums here.

i think it makes more sense to send it directly to one of the guys who offer honing services instead. shipping to cassicshaving, they shipping to the honer, then him shipping back to classicshaving and they shipping back to you seems like unnecessary overhead.

i suspect that they get some discount on the honing from the honemeister so they'll probably end up with few dollars from you, the post office will end up with few more, the honemeister will end up with few less, and you'll end up paying the same, or a bit more, and waiting a week or two longer.
nothing wrong with supporting them though, if that's important to you.

again, depending on who you got your razor from it may or may not be shave-ready, so being on the safe side is not a bad choice at all.

Makes sense. I believe that Lynn Abrams does the honing for CS. Can I send the razor directly to him? Does he do individual work? So many questions!

+1 on lynns services...

sorry about my above comments then. I was under the impression you bought it from classic.

If you go to Straightrazordesigns.com and look under their honing service they will hook you up sharp as a well...razor.

ALso I am sure there are members that do honing here on this sight as well as straightrazorplace.com

there is a sticky thread in the top of this section. the info in the top post is outdated, but you can always check with the people on that list.

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!

Oh, and I suppose this could be opening a huge can of worms, but why would Lynn be banned? He seems like (from what I've read) a venerable resource.

Hey all.

I've never posted here before, but I bet a few of you know me anyway.
I'm the guy responsible for the nuts and bolts over at
straightrazorplace.com.

Someone sent me this thread today.. And I thought it was time to take
the opportunity to do something I've been wanting to do for awhile.
And that's extend an olive branch to b&b. There's no reason for our
forums to have any bad blood between us. We're ultimately all about
the shave, the tools and the fun.

There's been lots of bad blood, bad bans, and bad conversation between
us at times.. And that happens between people. Especially on this
lovely thing called the internet. TCP/IP seems to bring out the worst
in people sometimes. I think it's genetic.

We have the same common goals which is to preserve the art of wetshaving, grow our common populations and provide all our members with great information.

So this is SRP officially reaching across the aisle to our shaving
brothers at B&B.. Let's put the past behind us, look forward, and
enjoy the shave!

Thanks
David

Wow. A simple honing question, and now we're one step closer to world peace! I, for one, am all for welcoming anyone and everyone to our little forum. I can only speak from personal experience, but I have NEVER enjoyed a forum like this one! The internet as a whole is full of arrogance, ugliness, and vitriol. Not B&B. It has been my experience that everyone here is respectful, helpful, and understanding. That's not to say that we don't have our... *ahem*..."discussions" from time to time, but even then they don't last and we can all get back to the task at hand...lookin' dead sexy and smoove! I would like to thank David for reaching out and extending a hand in friendship. I am constantly reminded of why people can't get along, and it's EXTREMELY refreshing to meet more and more people who's only goal is just that. Thank you David!

There was never any bad blood between the forums - just between a few fellas and a few egos, which doesn't exclude me. I am banned at SRP - despite having never made an offense over there (was a retaliatory ban), and Lynn is banned here at B&B for vulgarity. Lynn was banned by one of our longest standing moderators (who also currently moderates at other shave forums) and had, and has the support of the entire team.

The whole ordeal is truly a sad occurrence. I've had my differences with Lynn - but he's a good fella, I've never had a bad phone call with the guy, he has a big heart and he certainly tries to help fellas the best he can. I've traded pocket knives and razors with him, we've given each other gifts, I've helped fix his wifes computer, etc - and have no hard feelings towards him. Again, it was a sad occurrence.

We do not, and never have tolerated negative discussions on SRP or concerning Lynn - and have quickly stepped in and moderated or deleted discussions of that nature. Frankly, a good portion of the fellas over there, visit and contribute to B&B, so far as I/we are concerned, it's just one big family

The jiist is - there is no and never was any bad blood from us, and we're more than happy to extend an olive branch in kind.

Classy, mature and wholly commendable. Kudos gentlemen.

Wow, "One love, you all"

I have to say that I have spent lots of time on SRP and B&B (way more posting here) and I sure never sensed any hostility between to the two fora. Lynn banned for, of all things, "vulgarity." Is it wrong of me to sort of like Lynn even more than I did already for that! (And B&B, too. No dis to the home team here, and I really do feel personally closer to this forum. I do not see that B&B did anything wrong. Decorum must be enforced.) Anyone can get banned for being a jerk to others on the fora, etc. But doing enough to get banned for "vulgarity" just seems to have emotion and testosterone behind it. Maybe there but by the grace of God . . . .

The moderator can delete this if appropriate. It is not my intention to condone inappropriate language!
