Expensive Razors On E-Bay

I have been collecting for quite a few years and decided I wanted to finish my collection by getting a mint President. I thought I had found one and took a chance and bid on a listed NOS President complete with shipper and instructions. It was unused but, in storing the razor I think a piece of paper had been placed over the razor to protect it. The paper attracted moisture and caused the razor to degrade. The plating was compromised on the safety bar and the neck. The flaws were barely visible, but were apparent in the correct light. I wrote the seller and explained the situation. He stated that he did not see the condition issues and was reluctant to return the razor, thinking that I had replaced the razor with another inferior President. I took pictures and highlighted the problems. He refunded the amount of the transaction and I have been able to secure a President here on the BST. The moral of this story is that E-Bay sellers are for the most part not collectors. They see the opportunity to sell a razor and make a profit, not really knowing what mint is. If you really want mint , buy it here or from someone that is a collector and states it in the listing. I could have made a 265.00 mistake and had to fight it out. I was lucky and had a seller that was honest.

Glad it turned out ok for you. When buying on the bay you have to take a persons grading with caution as that's highly subjective unless they've been collectors in other fields and can cross over their experience. What's more important to me is their past history. What is the main thing they've sold. Where's the experience? I always look at the sellers other items and past history.

Although you pay more up front, you never have to be in doubt about what you bought. But I understand where your coming from. BST is a GREAT place with reputable people who understands razors as they themselves are collectors.
Merry Christmas!

Without wanting to discourage anybody from using B/S/T I've sold a bit of gear there over the years with, I trust, happy buyers.

On occasions though I have missed things, mainly very minor stuff but on a couple of occasions obvious stuff that I can't believe I've missed. While I've always been able to sort it out as a seller you are acting in trust that the buyer is not ripping you off too. Selling here on the B/S/T I have more hope that this is occurring.

The B/S/T is great but people are people. We make mistakes. Sometimes we also have different standards and expectations. Hopefully here we can sort things out in a fair and reasonable manner.

Glad the OP got it sorted on eBay and the razor he wanted here on B/S/T.

To me this is the main difference. E-Bay sellers just don't have that level of what is expected when buying razors. If you post a WTB for a mint razor here, chances are you will get one. I have bought a razor from you and it was exactly as described.

On the bay I used to roll the dice and buy razors. I gave up on adjustables as the sellers had no idea they were broken, this lead me to only buy a twist to open or a fixed head razor on the bay.

And the main point is that if you do buy a razor here and something is wrong chances are you will get a quick response that will allow you to resolve the issue.

I think we are saying the same think. My only point is that B/S/T is not perfect either so we shouldn't expect that.

Glad you liked the #58 too

The ebay razor was not mint then. Some of the high dollar seeking ebay razor sellers' images are phonied up. They have to be. They look too good to be true and experience tells us that if something appears too good to be true it usually is.

I saw some good deal on the bay too, sellers aren't all evil : / IMHO, MINT doesn't exist, I saw genuine NOS stuff with factory scratch and watermarks. BTW pictures aren't all BS, you can have magazine quality pictures if you have enough skills and a good lens.

I think that there are quite a few vendors on the bay who are experienced with razors and know mint when they see it. You are right though.... I've seen quite a few very nice razors with some value being sold on the bay that the person selling them obviously had very little knowledge of razors. Incorrect information is the first tip off. When they try to really advertise the razor up and they end up saying something that is not true in the description. I guess the moral is that even NOS stuff has been around for a long time and has been handled in some fashion.... and therefore is used for all intents and purposes.... and you as the buyer must be wary. Photos are great, descriptions are nice.... but nothing is as good as being able to inspect the item in person. Ebay offers the buyer quite a bit of protection to compensate for this fact.... and make it possible to buy a nice collectable razor without having to score one in the wild at an antique store or an estate sale. My Latin is rusty but..... "Buyer beware".

Glad your situation worked out and you got your money back.

Personally I prefer Ebay, the canadian wild is just outrageous. How many time I found a green crusty razor and was asked like 100$ ? They think green corrosion mean money....go figure.
