What's new

Ever feel like you are just helping the seller on the bay?

I have been bidding on Gillette Slim Adjustables for the past few days and it just feels like I am not getting anywhere. Geez one went for $61.00.

Am I undervaluing these razors? Are they just going for too much?

demand is high right now. personally I wouldn't pay that much for one. but the guy that has to have one will.

Ebay is funny like that. It really depends on how badly somebody wants something and whether they happen to see/be interested in the particular auction. Sometimes a relatively poor example of something will sell for a really high price, and a week and a half later, a really nice one will go cheap. Given that Father's Day is just under a week away, I do suspect that Whiskey Badger is right about it inflating prices, at least a little bit. It's probably bringing an influx of not-so-knowledgeable bidders with cash to burn and a deadline to meet.

I learned not to bother with eBay. Just check the BST here and if you can't wait post a want to buy. You will be dealing with more knowledgable sellers.... and friendlier.

Agreed as I have noticed on my Fat Boy quest, eBay is a friggin minefield. Patience is the key but im now a convert on the BST section. So much good stuff and reliable people.

+100 This is me for the majority of time now. Many excellent purchases from great people.

The key to eBay is to know what price you want to pay - and stick to your guns like molasses. If you only want to pay $20, then don't bid higher than that. You will never "lose" that way.

On the other hand, if you just must have that thing dangling in front of your eyes, then you're in danger. You might end up paying more than you want.

I like the posts in which someone casually says, "I picked this up on eBay the other day ...", but then neglect to mention for how much.

Yes, eBay requires a strategy, and most of all, patience. And the BST here is absolutely fantastic. You know you aren't going to get ripped off, and if anything people tend to undersell things - at least I know I do. But the floor never gets as low on the BST here as it does on eBay. People here tend to know what a Slim, for instance, goes for, and you know you just aren't going to find one for $15 on the BST. But with enough patience and creative searching, I'd bet you find a $15 Slim on eBay within 2-3 months. Just a matter of preference.

That's the God's honest truth there !!!!

If you're bidding early you could be driving the price up.

I purchased my Slim on our BST, but for ebay I would decide my top bid and put it in a bidding program.

Use a sniping service like Gixen. Place your bid, set and forget. If you win great, if not set another auction up in your sniper. This will also help you get the best deal by sniping at the last minute.

Agree with Cartier about Gixen. Easy to use and free, and if it only does one thing it prevents panic and ego driven excessive bids at the last minute.

Thanks for the info on Gixen. I have been trying to get a slim in the $20.00 - $25.00 range shipped. I guess it is the demand created by fathers day. I am in no rush....

+1 on Gixen. Another ebay strategy that has worked well for me is to buy small "lots" of razors. I've purchased a Fatboy and a Slim mixed in a lot of about a dozen razors for less than what a FB would sell for separately. It also seems that the bidding wars are far worse on the weekend, especially on a Sunday. Look for auctions that end during the week if possible.

I bet we were bidding against each other. I've also been looking for a slim the past few days, and I've lost out on every one I've bid on. I set my limit at about $45 because I don't think they're worth any more, but, as you've said, they've all been going for over $60. However, last night I lucked out and got a "buy it now" for $30. I think that's the way to go. You have to stay right on top of it and be there when it first comes up. I got it from razorman9356. He doesn't seem to have any more slims right now but you might contact him. He seems to offer what he has at a good price. Good luck.

One of the reasons I like the BST forum here is that you can trade... for example, I just traded a 34c for a Gillette slim adjustable and was very happy with the transaction. Everytime I go on the eBay I see several sellers that are trying to charge outrageous fees for shipping in addition to asking outrageous prices for the item itself, not to mention you get into a bidding war with others. All in all, I think that the forum here is much better.

In the end, you have to remember that it's just a piece of metal that you use to shave your face. That doesn't mean that it should cost an arm and a leg, and I think that the people on the forum here know that and charge a reasonable price, especially if it's going to another person who can appreciate it.

I was also looking at the Progress or Futur, but can't find myself paying $70 or more for those new. Since I have seen them go for $25 or so, I have been looking for that price. I am a cheap bastard. I am not in a big rush. I will just keep looking.

@Phillylion. I am sure we have bet against each other, I just let them go after they go above my price. Need to work on my sniping skills, lol. I had 5 auctions winning at one point at the same time, was wondering what I was going to do with 5, lol.

I will hit the BST as soon as I can post there. Need to wait maybe another 30 days....
