What's new

ER 100 and tall Century

Here are 2 more restores. Probably will unload these after placing new knots. The Century knot is loose and rattling around the ferrule. The 100 knot is fixed but the hairs are snapping at the base. The 100 is bigger than I expected. I'll be sanding off the molding lines and polishing before setting a knot on the 100.

To work while watching the Champion's League Final!

Heads off. Single edge razor in a scraper.

Cool. I have a similar Century (but #4) that I will get around to one of these days. I'll be interested to follow any nuances that come up!

Bored out. Variable speed drill, drill bit, Dremel sanding stone, and Dremel sanding drum.

Plaster filled ring inside the Century. 24mm opening.
ER 100 has a 20mm opening. I'll open it up for a 22mm knot.

I'd have to agree. The other direction is all white with one of those new TGN knots, but I think I'll go finest XH in both.

I sold an all white ER with a black badger. That combo looks pretty sharp.

I have two Whipped Dog blacks and they have minimal scritch

Interesting. I've only tried the TGN ... it was awfully scritchy. As I've only seen photos of the WD, do you mind if I ask, how deep of a black is the knot color? The TGN is very very dark, while the WD looks more in line with the "blackness" of most pure badgers. But again, that's only from photos. Half the reason I would put in a black badger would be aesthetics, so I would want it as black as possible. But if the color is as dark as the TGN, I'd totally be down to try a less scritchy black badger.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread a bit with the prior question. Back to your brush. The Finest XH is such an incredible knot. Every time I restore a brush, I say, "maybe I should try a different knot." But with the TGN Finest XH, you know you are getting a superior knot, and it is so hard to deviate from it. If I knew I was going to passing a brush along, I would probably never use anything except the Finest XH (barring a specific request). I can't wait for someone to try one of the new knots though!

I pulled these two handles out again today. I filled the Century with epoxy, two hex nuts and some cork, after removing the remaining glue, ring, and a cellulite disk below the plug. I filled the ER 100 with cork and epoxy. Ordering knots now...

Add: Ordered 24mm and 22mm finest bulbs for these handles. Waiting for them to arrive before enlarging the openings further.

Whoa. Those are some low sanding grits. I've been using 1000 - 2500.

I could've sworn that I've read higher. Should I get some lower grit paper?

All depends on how deep the scratches are. That is wet sanding paper, too. I probably don't go to high enough grit before polishing.

Looking good! I find myself using my long-handled/barber-style brushes more frequently lately. I guess I got tired of having my hand covered in lather!
