What's new

Enabling the family.

Today I passed on a new-to-me blue Shaeffer 330 F nib to my baby sister, along with a Fiorentina journal refill. I didn't have time to pick out a nice journal cover yet, but I'm planning to send that on also, unless she picks out something before I get to it. This was kind of a belated graduation gift for her picking up her Masters in Education last month, though I learned she still has a project to finish this summer to get the diploma signed (such a procrastinator!). I just figured a high school English / Composition / Debate teacher who used to write stories in her free time should have the right tools for the job.

Her first question - "Can I fill this with purple ink? That's what I use for grading." Made me smile. I'm heading out to Goulet to track down some nice purple ink for her. I think I'll look for a purple pen for her for Christmas, with a broad nib so her comments will really stand out on her students' work. :biggrin1:

Has anybody else had a successful enabling experience this year?

I gifted my Pilot Metropolitan, a bottle of Noodler's Black, and a journal to someone I met that just graduated college and found their first real-time job. He says he loves writing with it, but I'm apparently on his SWMBOs "persona-non-grata" list for enabling him. :biggrin1:

Get her some Private Reserve Tanzanite! My review on it but you can find many other better reviews! It is my current go to ink.

And good for you for getting her something fun and useful. I had a drafting instructor grade designs with fountain pens but it was before I really cared about them. I thought it was neat that he used them but never thought to ask more on about it.

For kids, I think the Lamy ABC makes an excellent choice! Sturdy, easy to use (there is a version for lefties and righties), and an attractive look.

The bride rolled her eyes at fountain pens until I got a Lime Lamy Safari in the mail a few years back that she promptly claimed. Same a few years later with the Aquamarine Safari. Now she has a few pens of her own and a few more bottles of ink. I think she is willingly fumbling her refill and cleaning lessons so she doesn't have to bother. Hmmph.

She knits me socks and I don't ask about the yarn boxes on the doorstep, I buy her inks and she doesn't ask about my new pens, and we all go to bed happy.

My LOTH seems to have adopted the same strategy with cooking, laundry, and most other household duties. Thankfully, her job allows me the time to pick up the slack. Really though, your story is so sweet I got a little choked up. You can never have too many warm socks. :001_smile
