EJ DE89 & Thick Handle Tech Smackdown

How do these 2 razors compare in aggressiveness, weight, etc? I have 2 of the Techs and really like them. I've seen the DE89 get many great comments on other threads. How similar are they, if at all ? Thanks for any comments

The head geometry on the DE89 is totally different from the Tech. I find the Tech to be to mild for me. The DE89 shaves much more like a Merkur.

Thanks. I was starting to wonder if I was going to get any feedback on this question. I wasn't "feelin the love":confused2

I don't think they compare much at all. The Tech is light, the DE89 is substantially heavier. The Tech is very mild and fairly smooth. The DE89 is more aggressive and as smooth as I think it's possible to get. The Tech seems a little head heavy, although the thick handled not so much so. The DE89L I have is perfectly balanced with the balance point right at the smooth band below the neck. The Tech is nicely finished. The DE is superbly finished.

I was noticing just yesterday how well my DE89L balances and fits in my hand. The handle is the perfect length with the end resting on the inside of my pinky and the balance point at the outside edge of my index finger. I couldn't have done better if I had a custom razor specially designed to fit my hand. Afterwards, I picked up a Slim, a SS and a Tech and they all felt clumsy and clunky in comparison. As all hands are not alike, YMMV.

Honestly, this razor is a spoiler. I have no real desire to shave with any of my other razors anymore. I'm going to keep a few as examples of beautiful mechanical art, but the rest will be heading to the bay or the B/S/T.

That's because the heads are from Merkur.

No they are not.

Do some research, don't spread mis-information.

The head of the Edwin Jagger DE89 is from Muhle.

I don't have a Merkur razor on hand to compare with side by side, but the finish of the Muhle heads is said to be vastly superior to that of the Merkur heads.

Who do you think makes them for Muhle?

The finish is vastly superior to the Merkur because they have them plated to their own specifications, as do Jagger.

Now go do some proper research.

SHarris,

The new Jagger/Muhle heads have been discussed extensively here. At one point there was even someone from the company participating. They are not the same as a Merkur head, any casual inspection can confirm that. A close inspection can confirm that this is a design unique to Jagger/Muhle. Some new DR Harris razors also are just rebranded Jaggers and the new Baxter of California razor is just a rebranded Muhle razor.

As to what exact factory they are made in, I don't think that has been confirmed, but they are definitely NOT the same heads as Merkur uses on their razors.

Design of the Mühle/EJ head is new and different from Merkur; not just fit and finish and looks but also the geometry is not identical. Shave is different however the difference with the Tech head is bigger.

Who do you think makes them for Muhle?

There is also rumour of the EJ/Mühle heads being made in the far East (India for instance). I am not even certain that Merkur does its own molding.

What I would like to know if you have any 'hard' data on this or is this just your conviction?

I really dont care if the DE89L is made on Venus by Venutions...:001_smile All i know is i have a Merkur 38C Barber pole and a DE89L and to me the DE89L Just beats the merkur like a red headed step child...:001_smile

The India rumor had to do with some early confusion on the design being similar to Parker heads. That has also proven to be false quite awhile ago, both by pics and a guy from EJ/Muhle. I can't believe people are still bringing that up. What's funny is that I took a chance on a DE89L over a year ago and just in the last few months everyone is talking about how great they are. My advice to anyone considering one is to get one for yourself, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I know that and I think the Merkur rumour has much to do with the pre-release pics of Mühle; that one was mounted with a Merkur head because their own heads weren't available at the time. These pictures still pop up in discussions as proof (mostly in german boards) but all they show is a razor that has never been sold.
