What's new

Edwin Jagger DE89L or DE86. What's the difference?

The holidays are coming and RAD is raising it's not-so-ugly head again!

I've been through a lot of razors but am on the lookout for a something new. I've got a Vision, Slant, Futur, Progress, HD, Long Classic and Gillette Slim.

I seem to be coming back to the HD and Long Classic. So I'm thinking of giving the English a shot with an Edwin Jagger DE89L or DE86. Other than the aesthetics, I'm not sure what the difference between these two razors is. I'd really appreciate any first-hand information.

Thanks! :001_cool:

The handle! Muhle head is the same. I have the DE89L and love it. And I recently discovered I can screw the handle into a Gillette Tech head.

DE89L is the all chrome handle with "lines" added for grip. The DE86 has a faux ebony handle without lines in place of the lined chrome handle. Head is the same. Weight is probably the same too. So the only difference is the aesthetics.

I have a DE89L and really like it. It's shot to the top of my "rotation". I haven't tried a DE86; I'm concerned handle would be slippery when wet. That hasn't been a problem so far with the DE89L. I think the handle is the only difference.

I have over 13 DE's and Just got the DE86, its not slippery when wet and its one of my favorites and part of my regular rotation. I have a Merkur 38C, Parker 99R, Red Tip, Black Tip, Flair Tip Super Speeds. Also a bunch of Gillette Techs and the Edwin Jagger is one of my favorites. I've got a Futur on the way and look forward to trying that out as well.

I have a DE87 with the white handle. The handle comes from EJ with a highly glossy finish and it can be slippery when wet. Following a tip I read somewhere on B&B I knocked the gloss down with some 600 grit wet or dry, used it wet, and the slipperiness disappeared. It did not hurt the appearance of the handle whatsoever.
