Early 50's Super Speed Score (

I just won this. The listing was not very descriptive. I probably can figure out the ID when I get it but I thought I would float it by the razor detectives here. I don't think it can be a '55-'56 without date codes. Maybe '48-'51? Does anyone recognize the case and blade style? It was described:

Vtg 1950's Gillette Safety Razor in plastic case with Blue Blade Razor Blades

"This listing features a mid 1950's Gillette safety razor in it's original plastic case. Included are some blades also as shown. I am guessing this was manufactured in 1955 or 1956. I dont see a number on the razor."

If there are no letter/number coding it is 1947-1950 (letter/number coding started mid 1950). The case is later as the last ones without date coding would have come in a dark red/maroon colored case and before that in a leatherette case (this is assuming it is not letter/number coded). You won't know until you get it and take a look. The last year they were made would have been 1954

Regardless of the date they are very good shavers.

I have two of them. A W-2 date coded birth year/quarter and my father's 1949 model.

40's style Super Speed razors did not have the date code on the underside of the base until 1951, 1947 SS can be uniquely identified by the lack of a notch at the end of the center bar. In 1948 the notched bar was introduced.

Mr-Razor does show the razor with a blue case produced in 1950 with a V3 date code. Here's hoping that when it arrives that is the case. Nice razor either way.

The V3 (1950) date code is quite uncommon. The 1950 Super Speeds were sold in the red-bottomed case. While Achim does show the V3 prototype with the blue case, I don't think that came out in regular production until a couple years later.

It will be interesting to see what you have. If your razor was made before 1950, the word "PACKAGE" will be spelled out inside the diamond on the base plate. In 1950, it was abbreviated to "PKG."

Either way, it is guaranteed to be a good shaver!

I wasn't implying it was a sure thing, just that it couldn't be ruled out. Even Achim notes that it is a test of the date code. More likely a seller trying to make a sale or someone selling it who found it like that. Could just be the case that goes with a black tip the seller also has laying around. Nice razor regardless.

Thank you all. I will post what the razor head reveals when I get it. Alex has me wondering about a razor and case mismatch. Either way I am glad for this score as I have been wanting a 40's style SS.

P.S. Sorry Turtle, I thought my thread got lost in "The Score" so reposted in the safety razor subforum hoping for some advice from those who hang here.

Alex, thanks so much for your research! I could recall some similar photos but couldn't remember they were at mr-razor, need to save that link. That is exactly the case. Now to see if the head shows "PKG" or "PACKAGE".
