DRY Skin!

I have found that in the winter my skin and face just can't handle alcoholic aftershaves (guess it's a lightweight)... I just seem to dry up too much and then my face is left irritated and dead. I am a huge fan of OS classic, but I have ended up using some Nivea post shave balm for the winter season. I was wondering if GFT skinfood would be a good AS for winter use, or just good in general. The price point is pretty high, so I was also wondering if the value was there? Or is there anything similar for a little less dough? Any answers would be great...

By all means look for alternative products to deal with your dessicated dermis. But there's something else you might try. I shaved with the dreaded but not necessarily dreadful Williams this morning and found that my dermis was dessicated too. I put a drop of glycerin in my palm before dashing the Master's Bay Rum into it. Worked like a charm. Try it. You might be able to use your favorite aftershave after all, dessication or no. This deals with the dollar side of your problem. Lots of glycerin for a few bucks at WallyWorld and you already have the OS on hand - or in palm as it were. Of course, YDMV (Your Dermis May Vary) but it's worth a try.

Oh, yeah it also helps the scent endure.

my way is invest in a good daily aftershave that YOu enjoy. I love Aqua Velva. alcohol always dries the skin. you have to follow with a facial moisturizer. something with spf 20 at least. rub that all over your face, 3-4 drops is usually enough. I have a $48 big bottle of jack black going on 12 months now. but nivea and some good quality over the counter facial moisturizers are available at local drug stores.

Proraso makes a nice balm, and a nice AS that is non-alcohol based, both are very well-priced for their performance.

I also use Lucky Tiger face moisturizer in the evenings and inbetween shaves to keep my skin moisturized.

My face also can't cope with aftershave lotions and not just in the winter!

You need to use a good quality balm. Look around and try to get samples first rather than buy full bottle outright. You asked about Coral Skin Food. This worked for me OK in the summer months; I just couldn't use it during the winter. So I would advise to try this first and see how it fairs for you. Usually I find that an after shave or balm may 'feel' ok straight after the shave, but it may start to make my skin feeling 'itchy' afterwards.

One good balm that I can recommend is L'Oreal MenExpert 24 Hr Hydrating Balm. It works and feels good on the skin right up to the evening (but not for 24hrs!).

Subjective/YMMV. We don't know exactly how your skin will respond to any given product. That said, you need to look around and try the various balms to find what works best for you.

Skinfood is good stuff in general, but it's not a big moisturizer. It's glycerine and not too penetrating. For some guys it's a light "seal" after the shave. It's not a workhorse imo. It's a must try though for everyone at some time.

I have very dry skin in winter and my favorite so far has been Kyoku Balm. It's price just went down around the net from 25+$ to 12.50$. It's one of the best balms I've used period. I think it's a superb product.

I recommend you to take a look at L'Occitane Cade Aftershave Balsam. I also have a Dry and sensitive skin, this balsam does a good job for me. It's a bit pricey, but I think this product worth it.

Thanks for all the good tips gents. I will have to add to my colection of AF balms. And soon, the air is getting drier :a38:

I like the Hydrolast aftershave conditioner for maximum moisturizing. For thin moisturizers, Skin Food and the The Shave Den work great. For something in between, the SCS milks and 444 balm are brilliant.

I tend to have the same dry skin issues in the winter. I usually either follow up the splash with a fairly neutral balm (RSC Soothing Balm lately) or mix in a bit of 444 with the splash and it tends to do the trick!

Seconded, this works pretty well for me, too. And it's got a pleasant scent.

One very moisturizing balm is the Weleda balm. It contains some alcohol and not everyone likes the herbal scent (I do) but it might be worth a try. I found it a bit too much in summer, might be an excellent choice for those with very dry skin during the winter months.

I ordered some unrefined shea butter from amazon and this has been some of the best moisturizing aftershave I have ever used. I follow every shave with a cold water splash, witch hazel, and shea butter.

Plus it is cheap...
