What's new

Dr. Harris Arlington

I have been a member of these boards for about 5-6 years. However, only very recently have I heard, I mean read, so much about Dr. Harris Arlington, and to a lesser extent Marlborough. I'm convinced they are great. But why the sudden buzz about these soaps? Do any of the other oldies also notice this sudden burst of kudos for Dr. Harris ?

Thanks.

I think once soap companies started changing their soap formulations to non-tallow versions, DR Harris loomed larger in the forefront of preeminent soaps because they maintain tallow in their soaps.
Just my guess.

They are one definitely one of my faves.

That is a good observation. I have only been a member for 6 months and DRH, MWF and Tabac seem to get most of the love for brand name stuff. Other brands get mentioned, but it's usually to complain about how awesome they were before re-formulation.

I seem to remember the buzz on Harris starting late last year, or at least that's when it finally caught my attention. I bought my first Harris soap (Arlington) in January of this year and have since bought the other 4. For me, it is one of the few products that has lived up to the hype.

Not sure that I recall the buzz around Harris soaps getting any louder during the time I've been up here. I'd characterize it more as a "drumbeat" where the reviews and comments around scent/performance have been pretty consistent overall. I will say, that for me, Harris Arlington has lived up to every good thing I've read about it.

It is a great soap. There seem to be a lot more folks getting into wet shaving lately and a fair number of newer members trying some of the top tier soaps, such as MWF, D.R. HARRIS, TABAC and some of the artisan soap makers.

That is how I see it as well. It comes and goes but the good reports on DRH have always been there.

That is another point that helps DRH a lot. It used to be one of many great English soaps and for some time they were not outstanding in that field. But without reformulations they became probably the best from the UK (regarding soaps mostly, the competition between creams is stronger it seems) these days and I make sure to add one or more pucks every time I place an order. You never know when they might reformulate too....

My fav has become the Almond version.

I have a brand new puck I have yet to open. I'm looking forward to opening it soon as I've loved every Harris puck I've ever bought.
&
Just received mine in the mail today and lathered her up. Well worth the hype.
I popped a puck into my cart when I last purchased some shaving kit and like these two gentlemen it has recently arrived and I am restraining myself and clearing up a couple of mostly used soaps before I start opening new ones.

Lathers great just like Arlington does, the scent is top notch IMO as well.
That's really great news, Arlington is fantastic and to hear that Windsor is good too is wonderful.

It's an excellent performer
It's a hard soap (triple milled if memory serves)
The scents are very highly regarded
It's pretty reasonably priced

Take your pick.

In my case the fact that it's a puck of hard soap when most of the current great soaps are soft soaps or only available as sticks wins it points.

Agree with this.

Bob's findings are very similar to my own.

When I contacted Harris to check the formulation of the Windsor soap before it was released, they told me that tallow was going to be their ongoing ingredient. They are well aware of other companies' "mistakes" where reformulation is concerned, and have no intention of going down that road to ruin.

I tried Arlington 3 times before calling it quits. It is a really good soap, lathers great, and is very slick....however, it burns the hell out of my face. The pucks are heavily scented and my skin cannot handle it. Arlington was among one of the better smelling soaps I have ever had. Citrus and fern I believe. Too bad it did not work out for me.

I was going to try the new Windsor scent, but Garry told me it is just as heavily scented so I passed on it.
