Does your lather improve with each pass?

I have notices that my lather gets better with each pass during my shave. Doesn't seem to matter if I bowl or face lather. My lather seems creamier, slicker, and thicker for 2nd and 3rd pass. Not complaining, because I am sure more protection on later passes when there is less hair to deal with is probably better. Anyone else notice this?

I've been using quite a bit of product when I create my lather initially in my scuttle. I have noticed that mine gets creamier and slicker..... but not exactly thicker for the subsequent passes. When I first started I was trying to use very little product (the typical almond size dollap) and my lather was drying out and getting the little "floaties" (flakes of dried lather so light that they float around the bathroom in the air). I wisely took the advice from several B&B members and used more product in the beginning. I don't hold back. If using a tube of Proraso I probably squirt a good 2 to 2-1/2" into my scuttle. Using more product when building the initial lather gives me more consistent lather throughout the shave. I may have a little extra when I'm done but oh well..... I just take a nice long sniff of it before I wash it down the drain. I think maybe the reason my lather seems to get, if anything, thinner for the later passes is because I douse my face with water pretty good in between passes and leave it wet when I apply the cream with my brush. Also, some of the water runs down my arm, hand, brush and into the bowl when I am stirring my lather up in between passes. I guess if anything I start out with my lather being pretty thick knowing that the later passes will end up with it being creamier and slicker.

If your lather improves on pass 2 and 3, maybe you need add a few more seconds to your mixing time.

No.

My first pass lather is the best.

If your second and third pass lathers are better then I suspect one of two things:

1) your initial lather is too wet, and as water evaporates out while you shave, the lather improves, or
2) you don't work your initial lather long enough, so as you rework the lather for second and third passes it gets better.

Ben, seems that I use about the same amount of product as you. Probably just have so much product still trapped in the brush that later passes just bring it out. I too wash about 2 passes worth down the drain. No biggie, there will be more tomorrow.

good points and well taken. I will probably try to pull the lather from my brush back into the bowl an extra time or 2. Most likely will result in a more consistent lather.

Ben this seems identical to my experience. I don't hold back either, but I'm a headshaver as well. I typically do 3 passes on both head and face...and the leftover lather that's squeezed out of the brush gets rub'd allover my head and face; then let it sit a bit as I wash out the bowl. Why not!?! Then rinse it off...

No,

I have hard water and a omega boar brush 10005 right now. I get great lather and I swirl the brush on the puck for more than a minute but I have to go back and pick up more product for each pass because the lather is very thin if I dont. It's a bit annoying and I am wondering if a new brush may fix this problem.

+1. I'm thinking there is still un-lathered product on the brush which is effectively being lathered on your face during those last passes.

+1. My first pass lather is always the best, too. Additionally, since I fact lather, I believe that lathering against the stubble helps to create better, more dense, lather. Since my stubble is minimized after the first pass, the lather is also less "foamy." I do not view this as a problem.

My lather gets thinner and slicker with each pass. For passes 1 & 2 I leave the water on my face from the rinse, but for the third pass I squeegie it off with a wet hand so the lather doesn't get too watered down. Sometimes that reinvigorates the lather and I add a few drops to the brush and get a really nice 3rd pass lather.

yes, but I think it is because the stubble makes the lather act heavier, and the reduced stubble for pass #2 makes the lather appear smoother.

I'd say that I agree somewhat... and the reasons I do are:

(first, should state that I face lather, so I load the brush very well, and leave it standing between the passes)

1) the lather had time to sit and mingle more. I tend to had a few drops of water to my brush between the passes, to ensure it's wet enough.

2) the more passes, the more the lather is worked

3) the face is more and more moisturized as you do each passes, so the skin is more lubricated and smoother by the 3 pass than on the first. I usually wet my face and lather it up and give it a minute or two, but I do see a difference at every pass on how the lather feels. On the first pass, the razor can pull a bit on the skin (depending on the slickness of the lather), but by the 3rd pass, my skin is as smooth as a zambonied skating arena. At that point I can even do some minor touch-ups without re-lathering.
