Does the Rooney/T&H brushes have a glueplug?

Hi!

I recently bought a T&H branded Rooney 1/2 in Super, it´s a supernice brush and i really like it but it´s a little too floppy for me..

I was thinking about steaming out the knot, drill the hole a little deeper and epoxy the knot back there again. So i have two questions:

1. Does these knots have a glue plug like the TGN-knots or are they bound together like a Shavemac knot?

2: The loft is now ~46.5mm, how low should i set it? 100% facelatherer, soaps, creams, croaps.. love the silky soft feeling this brush has but i want it alot firmer..

Best regards, Michael

Steaming out the knot is likely to ruin it. This was my experience:

...and now I have steamed two brushes. I think the OP has already given up on this idea, but I wanted to report the results for future reference. This time the modern Rooney-style acrylic resin handle emerged unscathed. However the badger knot was damaged. No tragedy, since my goal is to reknot the handle. The replacement is already on its way.

I used a Chinese-style bamboo steamer on a saucepan half full of water, on an electric stovetop, with a layer of waxed paper under the brush. After 10-min of steam the knot became a shedder. A gentle pull anywhere would remove a hair or two. I believe this was because the glue in the knot itself was softening: the hairs were full-length. After 15-min I felt the knot give. Rocking it back and forth caused the base of the knot to fail, as pictured. A portion of the base was left behind in the handle. More steam might have left less of the base in the handle, but I think the knot would still be a shedder. Apparently the knot glue was more susceptible to heat than the handle adhesive was, so it failed first.

We already know that steam can ruin some handles, and from this experiment I conclude that steam is likely to ruin the knot too.

If you steam it hot enough to melt the epoxy holding the knot in place, it's hot enough to damage the epoxy holding the hairs together.

Hi again guys!

I steamed out the knot, it took me 3 x 20 min to get it loose, and guess what happened?? The epoxy cracked and the knot ALMOST came out in two pieces..... i was sweating like crazy but i took a deep breath and tied the knot together carefully and glued it. It went out perfect, but i was nervous.

Then i drilled the handle and glued the knot back again. Heres a lot of pictures. The loft is now 43.5mm. Aaaaw yeah!!!

This is before, high loft little floppy..

I hope you liked the pictures, the brush will now rest ~24hrs before i try it. Overall i lost about 20 hairs due to the knot split!

So now i have the much appreciated 1/2 handle with a "24mm 1/1" knot

Best, Michael
