Yeah, the Chinese 12k's are as rough as guts when you first get them. They will need to be lapped.

Go and buy some wet/dry sandpaper in about 320 grit. Wet a piece of glass and then stick the wet paper to it. Soak the stone for half an hour and then lap away. Once it is smooth and flat lap it a bit more on some 1000 grit paper to further smooth the surface, and then use the 320 paper to round the sharp corners a little. And you're done. You probably wont need to lap it again for a good long while.

precisely!

I don't know if they still do it but I bought my chinese 12k already lapped/edges rounded from a guy on ebay. I think I heard somebody say the guy doesn't do that anymore, I'm not sure.

I agree that most of the C12Ks need to be lapped. Of the four that have passed through my hands, only one was pretty smooth and flat. The others had some clear needs. But, for ~80+% less than a good J-Nat they do make a really fine budget finishing stone. I will not be trading in my Asagi, but I have gotten great edges off the C12K and some stropping.

If you have stone counters in the kitchen, you can use those instead of glass. I just electrical tape the wet dry paper to the counter near the sink and lap away. That way the mess is close to the sink. And it does seem to make a mess. I also never ever do this when SWMBO is around. If she knew I used her granite counters for lapping, it would be me getting some serious lapping :001_rolle:001_rolle

I think i read that on here somewhere as well, i bought mine a good few months back already lapped wth chamfered edges, could check the seller on the bay for further info!

im stealing that idea!

I just bought one on the bay and it clearly stated it would be lapped with chamfered edges.

This is simply genius and it shall happen...one day.

I received the C12K in yesterday and it clearly does need to be lapped and the edges chamfered. I got the edges done a one side lapped, getting ready to do the other side.

Even though the add said it would be lapped and chamfered, it wasn't so

Question is in the title. I'm thinking about buying a Chinese 12k, but have no way to lap it.

Yes they do need to be lapped and yes you can find all you need to do it close to home.

If you have a lowe's or home depot store near you then you can lap that 12k stone.... get a 12x12 piece of polished granite tile and some 320 wet/dry sandpaper, put the granite tile on a level surface then put a little water on that.. lay the 320 sandpaper on the wet tile and smooth it out so it gets sucked down to the tile by the water... put a bit more water on the paper to wet the surface and you now have a lap stone to lap your 12k

This is exactly how I am doing it, works great.
