What's new

Do I thin the herd or is it beneficial to keep extra razors on hand.

I have been wet shaving for about 5 months. I am hooked on the art of the shave with a DE as I was a long term ingrown hair on the neck guy. My first razor I purchased was a Merkur 23C and I shaved with Astra SP blades, my first shave I had a very small nick and the best shave I had ever had. a few weeks later I purchased the R41 and I respected it and still do and when I'm spot on my face is very smooth. Seeing as I could not withstand the R41 daily I picked up a 39C slant, its not as aggressive as the R41 and a very nice razor. SO now I had three razors, I picked up a DE89L, its a pretty razor but seems more mellow than the 23C, I feel like I can work the blade more. So naturally I said I would just keep it until recently my wife purchased me a 38C which is the same as my 39c but its not a slant. I do not want to keep the 38C if I will get the same shave I get with the 23c or the DE89L. Could someone advise me? I was thinking maybe I trade the 38C for a 34HD for travel? My skin is medium sensitive and I have coarse hair like wire, moderate bear thickness. Thank you for the help.

Keep the razors that you agree with (at most 3) and sell the rest.
No need for them to just sit in a drawer.

I traded my 34C for a Gillette Slim and love it. I have 2 Superspeeds as backup - i'll probably sell one since I really don't see any reason for more than 2 razors.

I just don't want to be hoarding kit unless I have a reason. My logical next step is to learn how to use a straight razor for once a week type purposes. I do however hoard the soap and creams as I enjoy switching it up, nothing wrong with that is there?

Did you trade on the forum here? Have you used a 38C? I think it may be more aggressive than the 34 since its a heavier razor, not sure. The Jagger is nice but I think I would razor use the 23C. Im still finding that happy medium as I enjoy shaving daily since I started its no longer a rush job for me.

Not IMHO-- it just wouldn't be nearly as much fun if I used the same hardware and software every day. Enjoy your shaves!

Yes I did. It was a nice transaction too. No, I have no used a 38C, but based on the Blade gaps table I saw the gap is smaller, which makes it milder. It might be made this way since it's even heavier than the 34. It's certainly possible that even with the reduced gap, it could be more aggressive because of the added weight - you'll have to see for yourself.

No worrries about finding a happy medium - it took me buying a 2nd razor, then a 3rd, to find out which suited me best.

Keep them all until you get so many that you can only use each one a single time a year before getting back around to it again.

THEN.....

Evaluate...

THEN...

Look for more :001_smile

Personally I am stocking up for the impending collapse of our society, when we have to leave cities for the forests and mountains in search for more simple and sustainable lives :). Wouldn't it be nice to have clean shaves and be able to offer that to travelling strangers?

Just a thought to help you with your decision

You are asking a buy and hoard question on a topical internet bulletin board. The answer is keep buying more and more until you're broke and then buy just a few more for good luck. And remember, the ultimate razor--the one that's going to truly rock your world--is always the one you're considering adding to the herd!

Just don't log into the luxury wristwatch forums and you'll be fine.
