Disgusting Smirnoff Vodka Flavors

As some of you may know, I like to home-infuse vodka with flavors like raspberry, sour cherry, pineapple and pear. I use only fresh fruit and the results are delicious.

Smirnoff, on the other hand, is now offering some of the most disgusting flavors of vodka that I can imagine: marshmallow, caramel, iced cake and root beer are among the worst. I can only guess how overly sweet and artificial those new flavors taste. No, I haven't tried them - I have too much respect for my taste buds.

I guess Smirnoff is eager to corner the market among underage drinkers and sorority girls. I can understand that some people don't like the taste of booze, but there are lots of ways to make a cocktail that doesn't taste boozy without resorting to cake flavored vodka.

True and if only they knew better *sigh*

Oh please... Smirnoff is hardly alone. Nearly every vodka brand and a few brands of rum have jumped on the disgusting flavors bandwagon. Cake and whipped cream flavors have been out a long time, I was offered a sample of salmon flavor vodka the other day. Yes, salmon as in fish. Yuck. So as much as Smirnoff may want to corner the market, it isn't going to happen. They have LOTS of competition.

Smirnoff is hardly alone...

Yup, the range is mind boggling. Just about every major brand sold here have a selection of over-sweet, ester flavoured horrors. My personal favourite* is Absolute Watkins. I asked a mate whose name is Watkins what flavour that would be but he declined to comment. After some debate we settled on salty, yeasty and a bit gritty.

* Never tried the stuff, just entertained by the name, you understand.

Had some home-made bacon flavored Four Roses Bourbon, not everything tastes better with bacon. He used bacon grease to flavor it. I don't think I will be trying that anytime soon.

Other than expanding the market for their products to a younger consumer, I don't see the point. Flavoring booze - isn't that what cocktails are for? Think I'll pass.

I don't mind businesses exploiting poor taste to make a buck. What I DO mind is liquor stores dedicating oodles of valuable shelf space on vodka, flavored vodka, craft vodka, vodka in colored bottle, imported vodka, you get the idea. I understand they stock what makes money for them, but sheesh. Now I must dash and chase those kids off my lawn.

Cheers,
Your friendly, neighborhood curmudgeon :glare:

When are they going to start making tequila or gin flavored vodka?

We can hope never, but... already popular is Fireball cinnamon flavored whiskey liqeur. You would think that flavored vodka is kind of a natural progression from Absulut Peppar and Citron and so on, to a point, being it is a rather neutral spirit... but messing with the likes of whiskey, gin or tequila is just not right as most people that drink these at some level enjoy their inherent flavors. Lets hope there is an end to the madness... even Zima couldn't go on forever..........

I understand where those thoughts come from, but Smirnoff isn't targeting underage drinkers. And I'm sorry, but please don't whine about how much shelf space vodka and the flavors take up. Smirnoff is the number one selling spirit in the world, and people have been drinking it for ages. Vodka is THE most profitable spirit to make, sell, and distribute. Smirnoff isn't the best vodka by any means, but flavors sell like crazy.

True infused vodkas are much better than added flavors, but if I'm a liquor store owner and cheap flavors is what makes me and my family money, you can bet your *** I'm going to stock up.

Whatever floats your boat!

PS: Root Beer and Espresso are discontinued

This is a far worse problem than you can imagine in places with state run liquor stores. In Virginia, I read that a panel of folks from the ABC decide which products they will carry and they are heavily biased towards high volume, low margin new stuff like cupcake flavored Smirnoff swill, etc. at the expense of more esoteric products that don't sell as well. They'll still sell you the esoteric stuff if they don't regularly carry it but you have to purchase an entire case at a time.

Similar in Missouri. Liquor stores have to buy from a middleman called a "distributor". The distributor is naturally biased toward products they think make the most profit. I ran into this recently while trying to get Brut Crispin Cider. My local store wanted to carry it because several customers were asking for it but the distributor didn't carry it and refused to get it.
