Different razors for different parts of face?

I have been DE shaving for 30 years. And for all of those years, until today, I have had an irritated neck. Nothing major, just pinkness.

I didn't have the pinkness today because I shaved with a Fatboy that I bought from Sailorman on setting 2. No pinkness on the neck but also not quite as close of a shave on other parts of my face that I get with my Merkurs and my Jagger.

It seems to me that the best of all worlds would be to use my Merkurs and Jagger on most of my face and then use the Fatboy for my neck. (Yes, I know that I could use the Fatboy for everything by just changing the settings but then I couldn't use the Merkurs and the Jagger.)

Just curious if anyone else ends up using 2 different razors each time they shave. Thanks.

I was thinking maybe using a smaller razor like an eyebrow/moustache razor for those areas that require special attention.

The main issue with the razor, is lack of blade choice. The only blade you can use is Merkur, which many people have determined are not worth buying. :mad3:

Yes..............I have done this. I find the exact ame thing.

I'll frequently use a Tech to do my top lip, at the top of the filtrum, it's a much easier fit than even a Super Speed, means I don't have to go ATG there...less chance of nicking my nostril

Sometimes I end up with some irritation on my neck too. When that happens I Use either a conventional straight razor, or a Feather AC loaded with ProGuard blades. My neck will clear up in a few days, so I can return to using a DE or whatever..
Good Luck and Best Regards, Ken

I've used the Fatboy on 6 for the cheeks and turned it down to 4 or 3 for the neck in the past.

However, there's certainly no law that says you can't use more than one razor for a single shave. Do whatever makes you happy.:thumbup1:

When I shave with a DE, if I have a 3 day or more of beard growth, I'll do my first pass, WTG, with my 1904 open comb. Then I'll do the second pass, ATG, with my 1904 safety bar. I only do a 2 pass shave, and if I have 2 days or less of growth I'll just use the safety bar razor. This works for me, and I don't find it to be any problem. :thumbup1: :001_rolle :w00t:

What's the point of having all those razors if you can't use them all at once?

Seriously, why not. If you use a straight but still have problems with your chin or lip, what's wrong with finishing with a DE? Perhaps an injector is the best for your sideburns or under your nose. Whatever makes you happy. :thumbup1:

Jim,

Good to know I'm not the only one that does this. At first I started using multiple razors due to the size of my manly nose (nice way of saying big) then it just became a way of experimenting with, and using many tools at one time.

I call it Bladeblending. Here is a post about it from back in December when I was just starting out.

It's cool that you thought that some razors are better at certain tasks than others...I couldn't agree more. I think each razor and blade combo has it's strong and weak points, it's really up to us to find out which razors work best for each part of the face.

Although most of my shaves are done with one razor, I still occasionally enjoy a bladeblend shave.

I used 3 razors today. First time I've ever done it and may not be the last. I did it today just for the entertainment value of it. Got a great shave, too. Cleanup took a while longer than using just one, but worth the experience.

I pretty much do the same thing. I have a couple of hard to shave areas on my neck. I will just turn the fat boy up a couple of notches and it will get the job done. Saves me from doing an ATG touch up.

When you use an adjustable as many do, dialing it up or down for different parts of your face, aren't you effectively changing razors?

Is the tao that can be expressed truly the eternal tao? :tongue_sm

I followed your link and read your post and the responses that you received. The people who said that your use of more than one razor at a time showed a need to work on your technique are entitled to their opinion but I couldn't disagree more.

I have been DE shaving for more than 30 years and the fact that I've gotten great shaves on almost all of my face during those years demonstrates that I don't need to work on my technique. The problem is that the skin on the lower portion of my neck is very sensitive. Shaving with the grain with a mild non-adjustable razor and with no pressure will still irritate it.

However, as I mentioned above, shaving with a Fatboy set at 2 causes no irritation to the skin on the lower portion of my neck. So, I'll continue to shave with my Jagger Chatsworth for most of my face and then use the Fatboy set at 2 for my lower neck. Works for me and it is not a matter of technique. As you said, it is simply using the right tool for the job.
